Would it be really terrible to breed from my JRT who will be 2 and has already had one accidental litter. I would like to have a litter from her at her next season in about six months. Would I be the worst dog owner in the world?

Well I am not Cala - and I am not an expert - but no, I dont think you would be

Just as a matter of interest, how long ago was her last litter?

Smaller breeds do reach maturity a lot quicker, and it isnt like you will be making a habit of it, so I would say as a one-off it would be fine

I'm not an expert but to chip in my 2c worth, I personally wouldn't yet, she needs to recover from the last pups which she had very young, you need to make sure she is really good quality and would she be contributing to the breed? Don't forget that a lot of people are getting rid of dogs they can't afford, rescue centres are heaving with unwanted dogs (including a lot of terriers). Would you take back any dog that wasn't wanted? I would love to breed from my boy but I just daren't because I can't bear the thought of his babies behind bars or being put down..... I'm not against dog breeding at all, if you can fulfill all the criteria then it's a lovely thing to do, if you do go ahead, good luck and look forward to seeing some pictures!!

Well Im afraid Im once again not Cala but have bred a fair few dogs. You will be fine she will now be mature at 2 being a small dog. Also as she has already had a litter 2nd time round wont be so hard. Enjoy your puppies

She had three - she was a great mum - hardly lost any weight. Lost interest in the pups at about 6 weeks and got back to her old self straight away. Didn't even seem to notice they were gone. She is fit and healthy and seems very mature.

She really was a fantastic mum despite her youth. I have homes for three pups now - and I am confident they are real homes. I want to keep one as well but I also want to have her done without her having too many seasons. I figure if she has the litter early next year, then I can have her done.

Capability wise, if she had no probs first time around, she could/should be ok, but....... for un-neccesary breeding reasons, NO.

Yes - that's the thing you see - I want to spey her - but want a puppy from her for me - as she is my daughters dog. I can't explain but I really need a little something to look forward to and this would help.

Even though a lot/most bitches comes into heat two times a year, I still think it isen't natural for them to have two litters in a row.
On other hand, if you really feel you've found the "perfect" stud dog for your bitch, then do what you feel is right.

But I do understand a feeling for wanting something to look forward to. I'd planned to use the spring to find the right stud dog to Jonna, but then my late Buhund died in january, and a month later I fixed a new internet connection ( last one stoped working a like three, four years ago ) and started hunting for a stud dog.

When she was just about to start her heat I found MR RIGHT stud dog! And I would really lie, if I said I regretting having three! dogs now.
I only planned to keep one, but then both my mother and father fell in love with the other bitch in the litter...

Unless you can ensure pups will have a home for life before you even think of breeding your bitch, I wouldn't do it.
Shoot me down if you will but I do not agree with unneccessary breeding. I know I am going to be breeding for my lab bitch once she is old enough but I currently have 7 people with their names down for pups from her and she will only be bred if she has good hip/elbow and eye scores

She will have had two seasons since her last puppies when we mate her. As far as home for life - we had contracts with the last litter that if the people we sold them to couldn't cope then they could bring them back to us and we would either keep them or find new homes for them. I would do the same again. It's unrealistic to say that you can be certain that you could find homes for life - as you cannot know what the person you sell them to will do. However, you can do your best and know that you will be responsible enough to sort out any problems.

Sounds like you have your head screwed on about it, you're treating it is a responsibility which is great, I wish more people would consider these things before breeding

, too many people breed puppies, not dogs. Good luck with it, can't wait to see how you get on!

Sorry Nuala. It was the thread a while ago, about someone worrying their bitch might have been accidentally mated, and you answered, letting her know how it all worked out for you, that somehow got mixed up in my brain.

Totally agree with you Nuala, you can only do your best, but you can't be certain you've found a home for life for a puppy.
I believe/feel I found a home for life for the puppy I did sell, but I'm a aware of that I might not believe that next year. So I both talked to the buyer about it and put it in writing, that if anything happened and they couldn't keep him, I would take/buy him back. And that even if they knew somebody that wanted him, I would still have the "first chance" on him.

But this far, the owner claims that she would never have believed it could be this easy to have a puppy!

Though she did also say, when we talked on the phone a few days ago, that he did seem to have developed a talent for re-designing carpets...
