Does anyone have any experience of this or able to explain it to me in layman's terms.
I forgot to ask the vet today when they told me as it's in addition to ligament damage that has had a month's box rest and being scanned again on Monday.
I realise it will be another factor to consider alongside the scan results, but don't know anything about it.
Thank you

I thought calcification was boney which can interfere with tendon but not on tendon?
I may be completely wrong there but my horse had calcification of the splint bones which rubbed on his Suspensory ligament causing it to be inflammed and painfull.

I'm not sure! I don't know whether it is called calcification on a tendon, but is not the same as you get on bone. Is calcification the term used for calcium deposits no matter where they are?

I think so. He went in for nerve blocking for lameness which led to scanning of his hock. This showed ligament damage on the inside and something else. They xrayed this "other thing" from above, looking down at his hock, if that makes sense and weren't sure what it was so sent them off. That's where we're up to, 1 month's box rest on, bute twice a day and no obvious change in heat/swelling to my optimistic eye!

It does sound simular to mine then growth on the bone which when the tendon/ligaments move over it its like a rope and wears.

For his calcification mine had shock therapy and fingers crossed is now coming back into work :D

Calcification of a tendon happens in humans too and is common amongst ballet dancers. It is the laying down of calcium deposits in the tendon or wrapping tendon sheath and is not the same as calcification of bone over which tendons may or maynot run. In the case of one of my horses extensive ultrasound was used in the hope of "shattering'' the calcium deposits. Steroids are also used I think. You might get a better feeling for what is happening by looking at this which is a description of what goes on in a human shoulder when the tendon becomed calcified..http://www.eorthopod.com/content/calcific-tendonitis-shoulder
