Just wondering if anyone has expericanced this in their horse, my frinds horse has has bloods taken because her horse was totally off his head for no apparant reason, the results came back as calcium deficient and white cells all over the place which indicated some sort of a virus, she has had him on limestone flour for 2 weeks and had him tested again yesterday but it is still low. :-/
She has spoken to a couple of feed nutritionists and they have said they are baffled as its not a common thing.
Hes on good hay and is fed simple systems.
Anyone heard of this before??
 
Yes just last week mine was diagnosed with calcium deficiency!! I had never heard of it, hes on limestone flour for the rest of his life though as it gave him "hiccups (serious condition in horses apparantly)" and caused him to suddenly go crazy for no reason. Hes not had the follow up blood test though so cant help sorry. My horse literally has the vet out every week though, today he had two stiches in his leg, last week was the calcium thing and the week before.... an abcess ;)! Gotta love them...
 
How strange, most horses have too much calcium which interferes with phosphorus uptake! According to a nutritionalist I was talking to, most horse's diets are too high in calcium.

Is it possible he has an absorbtion problem? if its not that I'd have his diet analysed by a good nutritionalist - one who knows about micronutrient balance. It'll involve having samples of your grass and or hay sent for lab analysis - if you want to PM me I'll tell you of a person I know who does this, and its not as expensive as you may think.

My guess would be if something in his diet is causing a false deficiency of calcium. Some sites in the hindgut absorb more than one mineral, and by having and ok amount of one but too much of the other, it can lead to not enough of the first type getting through, if that makes any sense.
 
oh god how weird is that.
shes also been told to give him aloe vera drink and echinacea fir the virus.

His temprement has changed allot over the past two weeks he is allot more settled in himself, we were hoping the bloods would be ok, but really shocked that they werent :-/

Good luck with your horse hope he gets back to his normal self soon, would be interested to know the results of his next blood test, :-)
