I'm having a Friday afternoon blonde moment. Can someone please remind me how to calculate your horses weight. Also exactly where do you take the measurements from.
Interesting no-one else has replied yet .. I think a lot of people still guesstimate according to the height of their horse and then take into consideration the breed of their horse and its age - as this changes their conformation. There are weigh tapes now available which estimate the weight of your horse for you or you can try and be a little more accurate and measure your horse and use the following equation:
BODY WEIGHT = [heart girth (cm squared) x length (cm)] DIVIDED ALL BY 11877
the denominator (11877) can alter if you know the condition score of your horse to improve accuracy further. Ie, if condition score more than 3 change it to 11706, if less than 2.5 change to 12265.
Carroll & Huntington (1988) did a study on this - look it up if intrigued for more info
Sorry re-read your post and realised you wanted the points of the horse. The heart girth should be measured at the girth and the length measured from point of shoulder (head of the humerus) to the point of buttocks
Thanks for answering, I was beginning to think I was being ignored.
I think you are right that people are guessing. I have a curvy cob and a section B, and I have to keep a close eye on both of their weights. I currently use a weigh tape as a guide but got a new phone with an app on to calculate weight. The difference was unbelievable and I got a hell of a shock. Thats why I asked this question. Its possible that I measured them from the wrong points.
I will try again this afternoon using your calcuation and see what I come up with.
Its interesting about taking into consideration the condition scoring. I have never heard of that before.
Between me, OH, labrador and horses its never ending weight watching !!!
I'm off to find the study you mentioned. Thanks again for the info.
There are three main ways[weighs?], but the main thing that you want to know as a horse owner is, Is the horse losing, maintaining or gaining weight.... and adjust diet accordingly
1) a weigh tape, one side for horse one side for ponies [think abut that].... the measurement is taken from the girth circumference.
2) the mathematics..... take the belly girth and the length from point of shoulder to point of buttock, and do a calculation http://oas.uco.edu/01/papers/hapgood01.htm
I multiply girth squared by shoulder to buttock[inches] and divide by 300, the girth should be the widest part of the belly.
3) a weighbridge.
