Hi all,

Thought I would introduce myself. My name is Kimberlee and at the moment I am currently living in San Diego, CA. I own two horses named La Victoria and Catarina Sforza de España Antigua. Both are purebred California Vaquero Horses. The California Vaquero Horse is a critically endangered breed (I cannot count 100 of these horses) whose ancestors were used by the Spaniards of California to establish the territory for Spain. Thus, this makes them the old Spanish horse breed of California. The common height for this breed is about 14.2HH. My mare is 14.3HH and I think her filly will be an inch taller at 15HH. Both are grullas (black dun). I am doing my best to spread the word about this breed before they become extinct. I posted some pictures in the "spanish/portuguese" horse thread as well as a video of my mare and my filly in the video section. The dominant colors they come in are zebra dun and grulla. Other colors are red dun, claybank, black, bay, and chestnut. They do not come in any other colors and usually have very little white patterns.

My goal in life is to save this breed from extinction. If this breed dies out, so does the Spanish breed of California. No other breed can replace their "shoes" as no other breed was developed by the Spaniards in Southern California during this time period.

I can talk horses all day and would love to chat about this breed with anyone that would like to.

:)

Catarina is available to the right home. She would do really well in working equitation, dressage, possibly endurance, working cattle, and of course hacking. The only reason I am offering Catarina is that I want to breed Victoria again to Catarina's sire (Catarina is the only cross between Victoria and Pueblo), but I cannot if I still have Catarina as I am unfortunately stuck boarding Victoria at expensive city prices.
Catarina deserves to be shown as she is just super athletic and very intelligent!

Hi, saw your photos in the picture gallery.

I am a real fan of spanish horses, so I for one will enjoy the education!
I have always admired them and last year took the plunge and brought my own.

Keep us updated on your horses as to be honest i admire they're beauty, paces and boldness but tbh I have no idea of breeding lines or the different breedings as you described! I just know that I like them!

I am a big fan of the Spanish horse in general as well, though this Spanish breed stole my heart :)

@quirky - genetically, the closest relative of the California Vaquero Horses is the Puerto Rican Paso Fino, Chilean Criollo, and American Paso Fino. This breed only trots though, no gaiting! :) I love horses this size. Average size and compact! :) I have also yet to meet a farrier that did not fall in love with my mare's lovely feet! :)

Keep going with your work. I am a member of The Crabbet Organisation in Britain which works to breeds, promote & use Crabbet arabians horses (those with 75%+ Crabbet Arabian lines). There are stalwarts who have made it their life's work, & now they are a well known arabian line, recognised & sought after especially as performance horses. It is possible to save these old lines, good luck in your quest.

Here's one of my Crabbet arabians (96%, 100% GSB):
