I am moving my pony to a new yard this weekend.

He has been barefoot since August and doing great. He is fed fast fibre and hay and is at a perfect weight. He was hacked daily on the roads and his feet were looking fab.

Hes out 24/7 in the mud and although still appear to be doing great, I have decided to move to a better yard. I hacked him last week and he sounded like he had coconuts on his feet as we trotted down the road!

My question is this: We are moving from 24/7 stood in mud to a new field that is on sand and by some miracle is DRY! Could this cause any problems with his feet? Dry sand and a long thin field that is asking for my pony to gallop around in (which he will) He will still be on the fast fibre (just a scoop so he thinks hes not missing out) and last years hay. The school is also sand, but hacking will be in the woodlands. So I am basically swapping mud and road hacking for sand fields and school and forestry hacking.

He has very slow growing feet and is sound as a pound but is the sand going to wear them down quicker? Any advice appreciated x

From personal experience - we have a sand school, graze on sandy soil and hack over common land that is also on sand - I wouldn't worry, I find the sand keeps my horses feet neat and I've not seen feet get too short on any of the 8 b/f horses on our yard.

His feet will adapt to his new surroundings. The joys of b/f! :)
