The 16-year-old bay gelding, with whom King won a team bronze medal in Hong Kong less than four months ago and a 2007 European Championship individual silver, suffered a broken leg after falling during the Millennium Stadium cross-country phase.

The horse received immediate expert help, headed by event vet John Killingbeck.

King and Call Again Cavalier went into the jumping phase in second place following a superb dressage performance.

Yorkshireman Oliver Townend won the £100,000 first prize - eventing's biggest individual purse - with Lucy Weigersma second and William Fox-Pitt third.

Express Eventing organiser Stuart Buntine said: "This is extremely sad.

"Our thoughts are with Mary King and Call Again Cavalier's owners, Edwin and Sue Davies and Janette Chin.

"Our thanks go to the veterinary team, headed by John Killingbeck, for their efficient and expert handling of this incident."

The 13,000 crowd watched in silence as Call Again Cavalier was loaded into the horse ambulance and taken away for further assessment and treatment.

A statement on the British Eventing website read: "All the emergency services responded instantly, and the event was handled with professionalism by the expert veterinary team and the organisers, Tricorn Events.

"A full investigation has been launched.

"British Eventing is sorry for any distress the accident may have caused to spectators and their families."

This is incredibly old news

Not wanting to be rude but do you really think people on this form were not aware of this. It was over six weeks ago, flowers and a donation to mary's fav charity were sent and personally if you are reading this i would remove this post forthwith as there is no reason at all for dragging up a very old, and distressing to many, story.
we are all very sorry for mary and cavvy and all their connections and i dont think we need to repeat those sentiments they were beautifully expressed at the time.
I would respectfully ask forum members who really care not to comment further and re-open the whole horrid subject.
