I wonder if any of you could help, I have just rung my vet as I am new to owning a Mare, and my 2.5 year old has seemed to be in season for the past 2 weeks, so wanted to check that this was normal. He said no, and especially not at this time of year, It could be an infection or a lump somewhere and that I should bring her to the clinic to get scanned to check.

That's fine, I will arrange that, but now I have realised I have no idea of cost for a scan? I have her insured, but as she's young I would prefer to pay a few £100 and it not affect her insurance for the future, but at the same time I can't afford to pay more that £400 when she is insured and if it would need on-going treatment should something be found? She is insured with KBIS, but have never used them before so I don't really know what they are like?

any advice would be very welcome! - thank you in advance!

(PS - she is fine in herself, eating well and all that - I was only worried due to the length of time which is why vet was only phoned and not arranged a visit).

You need to disclose any vet treatment to your insurance - the cover is from when condition is first seen. If the condition later develops & you do need insurance to cover it, the vet will tell them anyway that he has seen the mare for this in the past. At renewal if you do not tell them about treatments you may find you are not covered.

Thanks for your advice w1bbler!

I have called them and they are sending out the forms for me to take with me and fill out, now at least I know I can do what she needs to get better without worrying about the bill, be it big or small.

Agreed with above. If a horse develops something it is bet to get every test done at that time possible humanely as insurance will rule it off even if you paid for it!
