It would depend more upon how balanced you are... If you are so tall that you unbalance him - can't keep your weight over your legs etc - you may be throwing him off balance which would indeed make him trip.
Is he fully sound?

He is fully sound and as we were cantering i was leaning forward so the balance thing may come into it
