What bits do you ride in & what do you do?? Mine is getting fitter and stronger at the moment, I find he leans and sets himself against me (only out hacking). I currently have him in a french link hanging cheek, but have also tried him in a loose ring which he goes well in but I have no brakes!!

the cob I ride is in a pelham, seem to be ok, but when se is strong, I almost have my fingers round the rings

, still feel safe though

i use a loose ring waterford snaffle for flat work and a waterford dutch gag for jumping they cant set against these and i have brakes much better than a pelham

I ride my cob in a jeffries french link. The one with the centre revolver in it! Basically just like a normal french link, but the centre piece is more of a round shape. In the past, at various stages in her education, I have used a full cheek french link, a hanging cheek and a comfort myler.

I used to use a waterford snaffle when I owned a shire x hann. It really brought him up off his forehand. Worked a treat!

We use a french link snaffle, she is not overly strong, but does lean and is very on the forehand, have been trying to school her out of it rather than fiddle with bits, however I do keep toying with the idea of a waterford, are they very strong (presuming of course they are being used with a pair of sensitive hands)?

Hattie- hacking/jumping/xc etc- waterford loose ring snaffle. Hunting she is in a waterford cheltenham gag.

Gypsy- full cheek lozenge for everything except fast hacks when he wears a waterford loose ring snaffle. I want to get him a full cheek waterford for xc so I have better steering and brakes.

Inka (not really a cob but is a heavy draught x)- loose ring lozenge snaffle. But will try her in a loose ring waterford, as soon as I can get back in the fields, for hunting as she was leaning and getting strong last time out.

French link loose ring snaffle for almost everthing. I've tried all sorts of bits and even though he can be incredibly strong and lean, he goes in this the best. In the end, reschooling has solved the leaning problem, just not allowing him to do it, pushing him forward with the leg and into the hand and lots and lots of inside leg, outside hand work, bending and flexing. A long term solution, but it works.:)

Neule Shuhe tranz universal - fab for whenever I need to remind him of his manners! We hack and jump in it.
We school in a loose ring snaffle with lozenge, and for showing a pelham with same mouthpiece. I find the universal much better for control of his shoulders and keeping him off his forehand than the pelham.

My lad is a 16.2hh (honest! He's not 17hh, he's not!) true HW I show as a maxi cob and I'm only 5ft so manners are important in our relationship. Like all neds he can get a bit giddy but as long as I can stop him going through his shoulder all tends to be well.

Happy bit trying!

A Hanging Cheek Waterford - I do not suggest this bit unless you have very soft hands.

I do however love this bit, I can control Ginny (without hauling on her mouth) and she likes it (never fights it unlike her old one)

Schooling, jumping, hacking, farm rides in slower company - Myler MB05 Medium ported comfort snaffle.

Hunting, farm rides in less sedate company - Waterford Universal.

The waterford isn't 100% perfect for hunting....but it's the best of the bunch we've tried so far.

This isn't a dig at the OP, but so many cobs are overbitted as they have no manners! My girl is in a snaffle and I do admit to putting a grackle on her as she crosses her jaw and gets her tongue over the bit.......

I've seen so many 'strong' cobs, chill out when they're schooled twice a week!

Totally agree with this, and he goes really well when schooled ie not on the forehand and doesnt lean BUT out hacking he just gets a little carried away and I dont want to be constantly pulling on his mouth. Im thinking from reading this post I might pop him back in his loose ring for schooling, then hack in his hanging cheek. He is also schooled probably 2-3 times a week and hacked 1/2 times so its not like he doesnt know better!!!

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

Jointed eggbut snaffle, very basic. I don't trust myself to use anything harsher because I think my hands still need some work, and although he is a pain with leaning on the forehand, we're getting through that with a lot of schooling so hopefully I won't need to change his bit. He may be speedy, but he's so safe I don't think he'd ever genuinely pee off with me... just occasionally takes us half a school to actually get from walk to halt!
