With the show season beginning, I was wondering what people use on stable stains, specifically on coloureds or greys. I have a coloured cob and he's pretty good at getting nice big stable stains on his white bits, the best I have found so far is Cowboy Magic, which is really good but still not lifting the stains enough for the show ring.

Does anyone have any ideas or tips? :)

Purple/violet shampoo and warm water!! i use a touch of silver wella shampoo on my cob, old people use it for lifting yellow tones out of grey/white/blonde hair ;)

I love absorbines stain remover. I think it's quite a new product. But it's great. I also find using a coat gloss regularly helps stop the stains sticking.

Cowboy magic - everything they sell! I could have shares!

Not cheap but you use very little so lasts forever - promise you'll be impressed :-)

Thanks, that's what I've recently tried and so far it is definitely the best as he had one stain that was really bad but it hasn't lifted it completely. It could just be that I've left it too long though! :( I also find it difficult to get his feathers as white as I'd like. Lol :p

I washed some minging poo-stains off OH's coloured cob, using Nettex One Step.
It's pretty cheap stuff, aimed more at farmers I think. It shifted the stains! Only trouble was, I was experimenting so didn't bath the whole horse, just scrubbed the stains and rinsed....

The tidemarks from the run-off have washed off now :o

Haha, oops! :)

The best way to remove any sort of stain from a grey horse is to wash it with Fairy, the dish washing soap!

Make your own, you can make it stronger and more super dooper!! Slug of purple spray in baby shampoo, or even better slug of purple spray in dermoline shampoo. Makes a superhero blue/purple shampoo! Wash, shampoo, soak for five to ten, rinse, repeat... For legs add a paste made out of baby powder (the one with zinc in) and I always add some purple spray to this too for that added wow factor! Leave to dry overnight and brush out the next day.

For tails, and feathers, I use: shampoo, wash, rinse, bio powder for whites with warm water, stick tail in, wait 5min ish, don't rinse, spray with vanish, wait for a few min, rinse very well, done :D a tail that dirt avoids for at least a few days! :) feathers, you do same apart from that I would not use vanish, and rather than dissolve bio powder into bucket of water, dissolve it in small amounts of water to make a paste type consistency, rub into feathers, leave, rinse well, taa daa :D

Sorry to say but the only way to really get rid of stable stains is to wash stains off every day. I also keep the tail bagged and a lightweight turnout on over stable rugs.

Cowboy Magic Green Stain Remover is my best friend. Spray on stain rub in with fingers, wipe off with damp towel. Damp towel works better then a dry towel.

If the stain is slightly bigger I use Gallop Medicated shampoo and spot wash the stain. Only take a couple of mins a day.

Its not a shampoo but what I found amazing when I had my appy was a water brush, they are fab!! for smaller stains and marks, bucket of water, dip the brush in, and brush on the stain and it just comes out, I was so amazed when I was first shown it! :)

I find with my grubby grey that washing regularly seems to help any new stains she gets to stick more. Same with coat shine. Both must dry her hair a little helping the stains to stay put.

She has a good groom every day, with particular attention paid to any stains. Often they will brush out, bad bits I use a barely damp sponge or a nice dense damp water brush on and they shift then.

She is on microlinseed and along with regular grooming keeps her sparkly with nice slippy hair! Tail is washed weekly so grubbyness doesn't get set in (if only she would quit weeing in the end though!). Just use whatever is to hand, but to particularly like head and shoulders! After washing and rinsing I wipe veg oil over her tail. If I have needed to bath a bit of her then that gets a swipe of oil too to help new stains slip off.

I do a good groom every day and put a lightweight stable rug on my mare. She loves rolling so stable stains are such a pain! I would use the purple shampoo when i need her sparkling and bag the tail up so it doesn't get dirty again.

I used the purple shampoo a few weeks ago and everyone was admiring her :)

A good brush everyday, teatree shampoo and warm water all over and then finish with Supreme products blue shampoo on the body and then finally a quick soak in Vanish pink powder for the end of a white tail. One gleaming horse :)

When mine was newly clipped all the stains just wiped or brushed off. Now his coat has grown a bit it's a nightmare but Cowboy Magic Green Spot remover works well.

What purple shampoo do you use? I used to get some ages ago and I can't find it anywhere now and can't remember what it was called but it was really good! :)

I love cow boy magic shine in yellow out shampoo. But we still had slightly yellow legs out our show the other day :(.
Not so much for stable stains but the blue rinse powder from supreme products is amazing for a white coat, makes it really bright white.

edited to say, pingpongpony i will definitely try the washing powder for his feathers, does it matter which one you use?

Best method ive found is first wash normal with bog standard shampoo (fairy liquid or a normal horse shampoo) then wash with purple/blue shampoo (i use supreme products) and then the next morning/3rd wash just use baby shampoo which leaves them very soft and white!

It does work!

I find cowboy magic useless tbh. In fact the best stain remover was lincoln horse shampoo, would use that as a first wash sometimes :)

Looks like the proof is in the pudding here! :D Very nice and very white legs!:)
