Calling all connemara people!

DGE - your boy looks super! He looks much bigger than 14.3hh. What level are you eventing him?

Bobbly - your grey looks so beautiful and clean - how on earth do you do it? I love his head. My boy is only about 14.1hh at the moment but is bum high.

Ok, so I am attempting to post some pics - hope this works as is my first go.

I've just looked up the breeding and I think yours has a similar breed line to ours:)
To post pictures just put the url code of the picture in the image box just above where you type your posts, would love to see them:D

Just seen pictures, lovely, really lovely !!

Your new one looks such a sweety, what a kind face!

Willy mostly goes intermediate and **, but we're aiming to upgrade consistently to advanced. We were recently at a ** with 1 other full bred in our class, one a cross - found out both them and my boy are by the same sire, and all finished in the top 10. Not bad for overgrown ponies!

I've had him since he was two (and I was 11, good parenting going on somewhere there!) and he's now 15 and showing no signs of slowing down - if anything he's the strongest and fittest he's ever been this season!

Gorgeous connies everyone!
And meant to add, mine was in 5'9/ 6'0 at 4, I found we went up to the sizes she is now when she filled out & built up topline.

Thanks BB - I havent met him yet so hope he is as sweet in RL. What are your boy's breed lines?

DGE - wow, sounds as though you are having a fantastic season! and how lucky your parents had such a good eye. Who is your boy by?

Thanks again LL - I think I am going to stick with 6'0" - luckily he wont need many rugs for now (and I am still thinking of ways I can wrap him up in plastic which can just be wiped down).

My boy is also from Ireland is a lovely stamp of Connie, just over night at 15.2hh he takes a 6'3" rug, one thing he has a very broad forehead and takes a cob bridle but a full or extra full brow band , I haven't read the whole thread so you may have said, what's his breeding?

WHGF - he is Earl of Castlefrench / Carna lines with Abbeyleix and Ashfield lines in back breeding. This actually means nothing to me, as this is my first reg connie, however I understand that the line normally has good temperament and talented. A friend of mine had one with similar lines and he was super so I thought it seemed like a sensible choice. He is more traditional type rather than the new sporty version.

He looks teeny in the pics, but he is only just 14.1hh at the moment. I think he comes from a line of "tall" ponies so will probably make over height. I am not intending to show him and I certainly am out of ponies so it wont be too much of an issue for me and my others are all 15.2hh+.

Haha, we were loading up my pony after doing a hunter class, when my mother saw someone struggling to load Willy. She told them to give up and that she'd buy him instead!

He's by Grange Finn Sparrow, who lived til he was 35, so I think there's plenty of life left in Willy!

My boy is by Murphy Rebel, with Killyreagh Kim and Abbeylex Owen on his Dams side, he was brought over by a well known breeder to run on as a stallion, but when it was apparent he would go over height she sold him. He is he biggest woose that ever walked on four legs bless him, but he "will go first" a bit now.

Have just seen the pictures.

He looks awful, not your type at all, i'm sure that you won't like him & he should come straight to me instead :-)

I hope that he is as lovely as he looks, please post & tell us all about him on Tuesday.

ooooh how exciting :D

i have had 2 connies :D both amazing!!

they were either 38 or 40" girths and were both 16.5" standard saddles although they were both only 14hh. rugs were 5'6" or 5'9" cant remember which and bridles were pony, boots were small.

and also - get a snuggy hood!they keep so clean :D

GCG-he looks incredibly sweet and such a lovely colour - looks almost roan?

Thanks Hazy. I have sent you a PM let me know if you have any more questions.

HG18 - thanks for the tip off to see if they may a hood that will cover his entire body.

BM - that has got to be the biggest connie I have ever heard of! Did he come from a line of tall ponies? Did he look/move very connie like, or more horse like?

And now for even more important questions everyone ... Colours! I am very taken with the idea of orange but think it won't suit him at all. Probably will have to be boring and go with navy and dark greens ... What do people think? I don't do pink but am not above putting purple on a boy! I am loving brown and khaki on the bay boys at the moment but they will never suit a grey so need some inspiration!

BB, DGE and WHGF thanks for posting breed lines. I am seeing a lot of Abbeyleix lines in the back breeding so looks like they are all distantly related. Probably the equivalent of Northern Dancer for TBs!

So far everyone has raved about their connies so that is good news too!

He looks like a large connie! Not sure his lines but he was pure bred! I didnt have him long as he wasnt careful enough show jumping! XC machine though!

He was called Dec at home. Ill find a picture. He was 5 at the time!

I event a 14.3 (just!) connemara, he has 5'9 rugs, 16" saddle. You may not have to despair on the bridle front, mine has a deceptively large head! He and my (admittedly small headed) 17hh TB have had to share in the past when I forgot the pony's.

Sidetrack, but :o :o I am a huge fan of your pony! Been following his results for a while now, you are a true inspiration :)

I have a Connie x, aged 8 mare, I would say she is like a traditional chunky Connie. She wears a 5'9" rug at present but is STILL GROWING!! Girth is 42/44" depending on season. Saddle is 16.5". Bridle is full with cob cheek pieces, or sqashed into a cob just about. Bit is 5.5"

oooh we have had a couple of connies by earl of castlefrench - amazing temperament, always eager to please. we have 14 connies :D love them! he is a stunner, cant wait to see more pics!

I grew up on Conne's and I am soooo jealous! Looks lovely by the way ;) I think 5"9 is what most of those I knew had and headcollars/bridles were always cob.. not sure on any other details! I can't think of anything else of much use so I'll whack a few pictures up for fun :D

Honestly, I think Connemara's are brilliant! Very clever and certainly are characters! x

Loving all the pics! I am a massive Connie fan, my girly is connie x tb. My YO has an amazing 4yo that is doing very well on the show circuit.

He is very smart and I like that he is substantial rather than sporty, however I think there is a risk he will go over height, like others have said many of the irish connies are being bred to be full up or small horses rather than ponies and are going overheight. Also like you mentioned on his sire's side there are quite a lot small performance horses rather than ponies.

The british connies tend to be more expensive as they are mainly being bred for the showring rather than sports ponies/horses and being in the correct height range is important so few go overheight compared to Ireland. Anything that might go overheight or is overheight will be cheaper, however if you are not looking to show then this does not matter and you have a quality horse for less money. If he does not go overheight then you may well have got a bargain.

Sadly it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find the smaller ponies around 13.2.

BM - he is so cute, he looks very connie like, it just looks as though you have really small stables next to a 14.2hh pony!

E19 - I agree 5'9" seems the way forward although thank you for letting me know that they still grow at 8! pony is 4 so I expect he will grow a bit more. Vet thought not bigger than 14.2hh but I am not bothered as I don't intend to show him (although he has won things at various breed shows in ireland inhand). I just hope he is a nice person (whatever his size) and we can have a bit of fun together).

He may do, she was 13.2hh and a bit when I got her as a 4yr old so she's almost grown a hand. She didn't grow until she was 6 and then git longer before growing up, now she's going longer again! I used to work as a show producers groom and although I miss it (indie has no papers) I have had so much fun with my girl, I wouldn't swap her for the world! They are cheeky and often give an inch they will take a mile but they will give their all to you and are often great and quick thinkers at jumping.
