Hi

I hope you can help me.

I am currently in that very sad time of ones life where I must write a dissertation.

My dissertation is looking at how we can widen participation in equestrian sport to reduce the somewhat elitist image it has in the UK.

If you could take the time out of your day to do my VERY QUICK questionnaire I would be forever in your debt. (So to speak!)

Please note: The questionnaire is only relevant to those who ride or have an interest in riding but DO NOT own their own horse.

Thanks in advance!

All done, the only question I was a little stumped with was no.10 as I actually got into riding as a small girl so went with "word of mouth" as it was my mum who sorted my lessons for me but this was back in 1977!!

I have completed your questionnaire which I thought was a bit basic. There could be more analysis of why people don't ride, and if they have returned to riding, why. I have recently returned to riding at age 52 and am thrilled that I have not forgotten how to do it. I have found a nice friendly stables, a great horse and enjoy the companionship of the people I ride with. I am also feeling much fitter for being outdoors more frequently. In fact, I am reliving my teenage years down at the stables,

Thanks so much for your feedback, it is much appreciated! Yes I am certainly interested in all these elements and I am conducting interviews to cover these issues which is another big part of this thesis. For my questionnaire however I have to keep it basic due to the statistical tests I will perform once I have my 200 answers. Best of luck with your riding!

I've done it but some questions weren't really applicable. For when do you ride it alternates between morning and afternoon because I alternate a late and early shift at work. I also got into riding as a child but that wasn't an option. Also, reason for riding is because it is a hobby, I'm not competitive at all - its his owner that competes , I just keep him fit during the week for her. I kind of ticked the one I thought most fitted, but it would be useful to have like a comments box. Good luck with your dissertation, I started mine with a questionnaire! I wish I had known about this forum at the time!

Have also completed your survey.

Although not sure why I started riding - I was only 5!
Also, It would be nice to be able to tick more than one option for certain things. (EG, where do you ride, what time do you ride).

For example, I ride regularly at a private property, but also have lessons occasionally. I also ride at varying times of the day, depending on weekend or weekday...

Done - I would say quite a few of the questions only had answers that didn't really apply though. The one about why do you ride was a bit odd, I didn't think any of the options reflected why I ride, which is purely for personal enjoyment. Ditto question 10 - I got into it as a child through a riding school and friends that owned ponies but just put "word of mouth"

I understand the statistic element however I agree with the above some of the questions were a bit odd as I got into riding as a child and ride mostly through uni and friends now I think it probably relates more to adult in urban areas who have started riding

I have my own horse now but participated in the sport for 30yrs without a horse of my own if you would be interested in my views

Done, but I could have ticked all answers to how many times a week as depends on work, time of year, etc. Also wondering if riding more than one horse on one day counts as 1, 2, 3, etc. (It's not my job, I just have friends who need various horses riding and I fit in what I can.) Am I analysing too much?! Good luck, anyway.

Done but I dont think it gives a very accurate view of my situation though - I'm a sharer (part loan my horse) so dont go to a riding school for lessons or ride at a riding club, I ride 4 times per week (not more than 4) and got into riding as a child (watching local riding school horses go past the window and pestering my mum to let me go for a lesson!). I then had a long break from riding (from 16 until 22/23), then went back to a riding school for lessons for nearly 2 years then decided to part loan a horse.

Not sure you are going to get entirely accurate results, appreciate these questions are for statistical purposes but I dont think your stats are going to accurately reflect the real situations of people who have filled in your survey.

I'm very similar to kc100. I've completed the survey but it does seem very much aimed at people who only go to riding schools and there are lots of us who are sharers.

done also for the if you are not riding regularay question i put limited access(as there is only 1 riding school in my area and that is 3/4 of an hour away) but i am also injured so would of been good if that was an option

I've completed it...I share a horse and just kind of fell into it as a kid becuase of next door neighbours...only had 2 riding lessons in my life!

Done. Good luck with your dissertation. I do agree that perhaps more of the questions could have allowed for multiple answers, but totally get that stats are a pain and you don't want to make things too complicated. It might have been a good idea to include a section for qualitative answers so people could explain in a bit more depth why they ride but don't own their own horse, or are you planning to follow up the questionaires with interviews ect?

I filled it in but like several others I am not sure that my answers really reflect my situation. I am a member of an affiliated body which is not mentioned in the questionnaire, I ride at a polo club and occasionally on friends horses at livery yards or other business premises. I ride for personal enjoyment, I ticked all the boxes but they are all side factors really. As to how I got involved, I can't remember not wanting to be involved, there wasnt any outside influence really.

I would be very interested to see the conclusions of your dissertation when it is completed :)
