Advice on the breed please as a pleasure and/or competition horse - good and bad! I have a Trakehner and would be really interested to know if mine is typical of the breed.
My girl is absolutely lovely, stunning to look at, amazing paces and a very sweet temperament. Only thing is, she can be very sharp at times, like you can be riding along one minute the next you are in the middle of the air, then you just carry on like nothing has happened! We do a lot of dressage, she's incredibley talented, but can be opinionated!
She is by Maestro, and I know he did exactly this with whoever was riding him! She's the best little horse ever though and I love her quirkyness!
So what is yours like? Have you got any photos? Here are some of Gertie...
I have one!! He is 17.3hh and still keeps having growth spurts and he's only five. He is absolutely wonderful but again can be sharp but he is also very brave. He taught a bloke to ride before I had him so in a good way he is used to someone bouncing up and down with no balance without getting silly, but can be a little opinionated when being asked to do proper work. I have no pics to post as there is only one of my phone and have no idea how to get it on here!! The only downside is that I bought him from a dodgy dealer who said he was a private sale and she said that the importers lost his paperwork. I have contacted the German Trakehner society and they cannot match him to anything with his brand and markings!!!!! But he does have the proper brand, it's just a shame that I have no information on him and the passport they got him was with the BSJA. Oh and he is a little clumsy at times - bit too big for his brain!!!! ;-)
I own 2 trakehners. One pure bred and one part bred. They are both 3 and a half years of age.
This is my pure bred. She is by Holme Grove Solomon and i have owned her from a foal. She has been away for the last couple of months being backed. She has proved to be a very laid back young lady, accepting everything that has been asked of her and hasn't done anything untoward at all. As to whether she will remain this way in competition etc remains a mystery as of yet, but so far so good. Tilly is a very intelligent young animal but can be a little backward at times and with this in mind we are hoping to keep her in very light work over the winter to keep her mind occupied and to keep up the consistency. She is a real character though, wouldn't be without her!! hehe! Here are a couple of pics of her:
This is my other 3 year old. She is a Trak x arab, out of a mare by Downlands Hasardeur, by an Arab stallion from racing lines. She is extremely fast, sharp and forward thinking. You only have to tell her something once and she remembers it forever. She hasn't been backed yet and i will be careful when we do start her, as to not rush her. Here are a couple of pics of her:
Yep I've got a part trakehner by Kir Royal. She doesn't have the best conformation or paces and is a pleasure horse rather than competition. She is an opinionated mare
But lovely at the same time, very pretty, never known an ugly trakehner
She's only little, a very LW 15hh, as she's crossed with a riding pony, so her dam must have been under 14.2hh whereas her sire was 16hh. I know another trakehner who is simply the kindest horse with absoloutly beautiful paces. Both are a little sharp, but not massively. She's a good little jumper and I've jumped just over 1m with her (which was big for me haha)
I've got 3 atm, all very different to look at, all kind lovely mares.
Molly is 6, home bred by Tycoon, my baby has been a pleasure from day 1, uncomplicated, can be sensitive but brave and a brilliant hunter.
Gigi is 13, backed last year having been a broodie all her life a big 16.3 puppy of a mare, who would take things personally and be hurt if you were ever nasty to her, but responds beautifully to a pat and a word.
Charley, 8yo by Charley Chaplin, state premuim mare, been a broodie, and will be a riding horse when I get time. Stressy mare who I think will settle better when she has a job to do.
I have a 13 year old trakehner gelding who is 17.1hh. He was bred in Germany and came to England 18 months ago when I bought him.
He is the most genuine, calm, honest, intelligent horse I have owned. He is a fabulous dressage horse who also has a good jump(it's me that hasn't hence the size of the fences in the photo!
). I could ride him down the M6 and he wouldn't be fazed by it!
He certainly is no slug though!
He's sharp a lot of the time and can stress quite a bit. But he's very intelligent, and a real all rounder, having tried everything from eventing to side saddle.
I would definitely get another, love them as a breed.
Stan is pure, Italian bred, Arystokrat as the sire & Habicht is the grand sire (on dams side). He's lovely, can be stroppy & opinionated. Very smart & has a HUGE jump on him.
He's only 7 & I've had him for about 6months, but known him for about 18months.
Dolly is 1/4 trakehner, sire is 1/2 Trak & 1/2 Shire, dam is full shire. Her grand sire is Mushchamp Korsakof.
She's very quick to learn, a bit anxious at times, but a wonderful nature.
She's only 3 & being backed, -just the easiest horse in the world to do.
I would love to put her to a small trakehner stallion in the future & get a beautiful small Dolly.
I've 2, both by Grafenstolz out of my Welton Crackerjack mare.
Here is Heidi as a yearling:
and now just backed:
and here Hamlet, her full brother:
Heidi was pretty feisty as a foal and yearling but has now completely calmed and has been a doddle to back. Hamlet is a typical colt and has his calming yet to do! However both are super friendly and a pleasure to own.
I breed pure and part breds and adore them. Beautiful, intelligent, sensitive. Get a Trakehner on side and they will do anything for you. They are the Thoroughbreds of the warmblood world.
All mine have fabulos temperaments. This is a yearling Volatis Valiant (by Ivernel x H.G.Solomon x E.H Consul) who went out to two county shows this year, and took everything totally in his stride, a total angel. And he did very well which was the icing on the cake
This is a pure bred filly I produce and show for my boss. Been a chamnpion loose jumping and as a hack in the show ring. She's 3 this year and will be backed over the winter. Portia (Axis x Abdullah x Graditz)
This is one of my fillies from this year, Tia, the most sweet and gorgeous little girl. Very special as we nearly lost her earlier in the year, but you'd never know it as she is tough as old boots and fighting fit again. Volatis Elfentime (E.H Latimer x Tycoon x E.H Consul)
And finally a part bred, Volatis Vivaldi. A fabulous chunky monkey, bucket loads of presence, who will hopefully be sold to go showing as I think he'll excell. By Ringo x H.G. Solomon x E.H Consul
Thanks for posting all these lovely Trakehner piccies - every one is stunning. I was definitely not looking for a Trakehner when I bought Jerry but he was so fantastic when I had him on trial, I knew I'd never find a better horse and I still believe that now, 18 months on.
I agree that they are not for novices but like someone has already said, if you get them on your side you can train that sharpness to be a beautiful responsive ride.
