Calling all you severe sweetitchers...

My horse suffers with sweetitch rather severely, I have invested in a Boett this year and have been using it for the past two months. And so far so good, Daisy hasn't started itching yet, so i am managing to keep her in at night, which is great as she is prone to putting weight on really quick and i can manage her weight so much better when she's in at night.

I was just wondering if any of your guys have started their itching yet?
I know she will soon, and she will have to be out 24-7 then, but i was just wondering if it was the reason i have the boett that she hasn't yet?

Mine has just started in the last two days, rubbing his mane and tail with great determination. Bought a boett a few weeks ago, before that he didn't seem to be itching really and I used a mesh fly rug. Not sure my boett is big enough - what's yours like round the bum and tail?

our welshie has a mild case of sweetitch and has a normal flyrug.we feed her a suppliment called think fly which so far seems to be doing the job.how much are boets nowadays as may invest in one for the long term

It all depends on the size you want, i picked a second hand one up in the winter on ebay for £72 but for that size brand new is just over the £200 mark!

Ottinmeg, mine hangs down to about halfway down her tail,

it is a little big, but it covers loads so i am happy with that.

my horse is in her boett rug atm... only just got it .... she is itchiing but it is begining to slowed down ... i think there great rugs

does any one out there know about the sweet itch jabs ? and if the have been aproved yet ?

My Fell has been in her fly-rug for a while now. She mainly wears a Rambo Sweet-itch hoody with a lycra hood underneath. I have put her Snuggy Hoods on tonight though as it's clean and we're off to a show tomorrow. I've been feeding her black sunflower seeds for over a year now after reading about it on here and I'm sure it has made a difference. I also use Megatek hair rebuilder and try to use a detangler regularly to minimise hair damage.

There are no sweet itch jabs this year, but anyone who did the drug trial last year and sent in their results can use the capsules this year - one every two weeks. My boy started his in February and will continue until November, and so far so good.

My friend's Shire mare has been wearing her Boett for the past 3 weeks and so far has shown no sign of itching. She had it on all last summer and didn't suffer from sweetitch at all, like she had the previous year, without the rug. She actually asks to have it put on and lowers her head for us, which is just as well as she stands over 17 hands!!! I think that as long as it's plenty big enough and fits well they shouldn't start itching at all.
