Does anyone under 25 on here tow or drive a box? I'm just exploring my options as me and my mum don't really know what to do. She's getting fed up of taking me places and is wanting me to do my trailer test. However she's been quoted 5 grand to insure me on the landrover (:eek3:) and box insurance would be so much cheaper.. but then there's the whole car and trailer VS box debate!!! Just don't know what to do! So what do other young people do? Surely I can't be the only one having this dilemma!

I hire a small box when I need to go out.. I used to have a trailer but like you my parents got a bit sick of taking me everywhere, and I don't have my trailer license. I sold my trailer and my parents sold their landrover to buy a more economical car, and we use the money from my trailer and money saved on the car towards hiring. The amount I go out I can't justify the cost of buying a box (although I couldn't afford even if I wanted to!) but I can't afford to run a 4x4 of my own either so this seems like the best compromise for now.

That sounds really sensible and something we may end up doing. I'm saying we should get a box but my mum is saying we don't go out enough... to which I reply that I would if I had transport!

We have a 3.5t perfect for us, and the insurance isn't much even when I was only 21.

I have 2 big fat IDs and I don't think there's any way a payload of a 3.5t would fit them in :( Getting ponies next time! xx

we are buying one of those 3.5t two horse van things for that reason. it can be run with car licence and same price as my car insurance

I think I would have to get a larger box (7.5t) and take a separate test as I don't think my 2 would fit in a little van. Would be perfect if they did!

Ah no def not to the big fat ID's :D, ours are a dainty 14.3hh show pony and a 15.2hh and both together are on the limit of the payload!

I think if you want to travel both together you'll have to take one of the tests....

OH and I are having a real dilemma over transport.
He's 23 and has a land rover Defender so it would make sense for us to have a trailer. However he's been quoted £540 to do 4 hours of instruction and the test!
Then we'd have to hire a trailer but excess is £800 as he's under 25, same to hire a box. Think we are going to save up and buy a cheap trailer but probably won't be until next year then we might as well wait until he's 25! :/
It's all so expensive!!

Very jealous.. we are most definitely getting ponies next time they seem to be loads easier for everything! Which test though?! The saga continues..

It's crazy money isnt it! We already have the defender and trailer but it's just a matter of not being able to afford the insurance on the car! For the price of selling the car and trailer we could afford a box and insurance. A box just seems an insane luxury atm though when we're strapped for cash.

The only joys of being a midget :D:D:D:D I'd look ridiculous on anything over 16hh really! Little ones are far easier and less distance to fall...

No help with which test to do though, I'm debating whether to do my 7.5t test or even HGV test in the future as I'd love a box with living. But really our little one does us fine! I'd have thought that the insurance and running costs could be slightly less for the box than a towing car (only due to your age and the insurance for the car) if that helps? Plus my mum hated towing, so maybe that has swayed my view.

I was in your boat not so long ago.
If your parents are happy to keep the 4x4 and trailer - take the trailer test (1 whole day training, followed by a morning brush up, then the test cost me around £300).
Its the best £300 I ever spent!!! - The insurance on the 4x4 was in Mums name, as she genuinely drove it more, then when I borrowed it a few days a month - I think it added £120 per year to the insurance....

Rental is all very nice - but you do pay a premium for sure! Many companies are starting to set limits of rental at 25 years old and above only. - Besides, you cant fit your two in a 3.5 rented anything!

Lol I do hate being tall sometimes!! Yeah I think insurance and running costs are lower, it's just a case of do we go out enough to warrant a box!? My mum also hates towing, you should see the look on her face when we pull up somewhere with limited turning round space :D

Yes all valid points, there's no way ours would fit in a 3.5! I think it would be a struggle getting one of them in one tbh :D She's insured on my car anyway so the days I would borrow the car she wouldn't be left without.. Think I might just take the plunge and get my trailer test booked!

We go out far more now we have the box.....

The last straw for my poor mum was taking a wrong turn and getting stuck in a very very posh drive in front of very big and very shut gates, ended up with the trailer jackknifed trying to turn round until the gardener came and rescued us :D I still laugh about it my mum doesn't ;).
