hey! i have a rather excited 1yo choc lab, and i feel he seems to lack company. He is our only dog! I been told by many people that by getting another older calm dog, will help him and that he will learn from the older calmer dog?

I was just wondering if anyone had labs, and if they were there only dog, or if they had other dogs, and if you think it makes a differance?

xx thanksxx

I have a black lab and she is an only child (well apart from the cat) She is very sociable and loves to play with my mum's golden lab (also only child) but when we got another lab that was looking for a home she was not happy at all and didn't settle into it and we ended out having to rehome the new lab.

I think it depends on the dog, it didn't cross our minds that Molly wouldn't take to another dog as she is so friendly and we were devestated when it didn't work out. My lab is defo happy as an only child.

aww bless herxx so sorry it did not work out

We have a black Lab bitch who for the last 10 years has had our lovely GSD bitch as company but we sadly lost her end November. In January we will have two little pups, sisters, join the family because I hate to see her on her own. She's adjusted well and always liked to be centre of attention anyway but I hate for her not to have any play mates of her own kind. We're getting two so they have each other to grow up with and so that Sophie can still get lots of attention from us without a pup feeling left out. Hope it works cause they ain't going back. My friend has a choc lab and they got a rescue lab who seemed to be doing ok but then attacked their choccie suddenly so had to be rehomed on her own. My brother has a black lab and recently added another and those two get on great so definitely down to the dog, but I do like them to have the company of their own kind whenever possible. I've never heard of an aggressive choc lab, they all seem to be soft and a little mad so why not go for it.

To be fair, he is still only young hence the craziness. Also choccies are well known for their ditzey nature!

We have a 7 year old black lab. We lost our older lab in Jan and were looknig at getting a new one as Tina (the 7 year old) is a gundog and starting to get on a bit so we wanted to get a new pup to start training it up. So in September we got a 10 week old yellow lab.

Tina was not impressed. The pup was too much for her, always in her face etc It took a good while for her to come round to the puppy but we just persevered with it.

I am worried but we have a large cage to keep them in until they all get used to each other. She can go out for walks while they go into the garden to play until they're big enough to walk as a pack. I guess we won't know for a while if we've done the right thing but my gut feel is she'll enjoy the company eventually.

We have a 8 year old black lab bitch who has always been an only dog! she was very excitable and only really grew up at about 6 altho she still has her moments! I think if we ever had another dog we would have 2. she seems quite happy on her own probably because she loves all the attention!
