We've recently started feeding my mare Calm & Condition as she has started to drop weight, this has lead to a discussion on the yard as to wether it needs to be soaked beforehand. At a yard I used to groom at they never did, but then I remember somebody telling me last year yes you do have to soak it! Needless to say I've tipped it into a bin and thrown the bag away! For the last three days I've soaked it for 5-10mins before hand and its expanded considerably so I'm going to carry on doing this!

But cutting a long story short, should you or shouldn't you?!?

Oh and excuse the excessive !!!'s I think I'm addicted to them!

I used it last year and yes you do soak it, like sugarbeet. Can't remember the quantities but do it so it's not too dry or too sloppy. Takes about 5-10 mins to 'cook' from what I remember!
Hope that helps!

Cheers, thought I was right but wanted to check I wasn't uneccesarily creating more work!

I just whack some water in and hope it's enough, so far so good!

Yeah it's not too much bother. In the cold weather you can do a bit extra for the next day to save time but I found when it got warmer it would go off/mouldy over night. Anyway doesn't take long, good luck! By the way I fed it for the calm part didn't need the condition but it didn't seem to make much difference, trying the list of calmer supplements this winter!!

Thank you!

Wanted to give her build up or barley or something along those lines but it's no doubt going to blow her mind as she's a bit skitty as it is, although a friend says Calm & Condition fizzed her horse up worse than anything else!

Who knows, soon find out!

I never did but then I fed it a good few years ago. We feed Allen & Page Quiet Mix at work and don't soak it, I read the bag last week actually and it said they recommend soaking it. The amount of water you need to use is the same volume of the feed, eg. if you feed a scoop of it then stick a scoop full of water in with it and leave it 5-10 mins.
When I fed my pony C&C though, she went totally loopy. I haven't bothered trying any A&P feeds after that!

i've used it on and off but i never soaked it, i also feed some other allen and page feed i don't soak that but i just make the sugar beet a bit more watery than normal and the horses seem to be fine wih this

My mare hasn't put on much weight with it but has begun to muscle up a bit and has a fab shine on her coat and she's a dark grey! She also loves it plus she's a fussy eater so it must be yum scrum. It warns you to soak it on the bag,i spoil mine and soak it in loads of hot water so it turns into a porridge, she eats it warm as i think it warms her belly up! yes i'm a daft owner that spoils my horse far to much,a girl on our yard also feeds it and thinks i'm mad she just throws some cold on it if anything and sais that'll do,it never soaks though,it does concern me as it becomes as big as sugar beet after it's soaked. I put half a scoop in each feed and then fill a washing up bowl to the top then pour half a bowl of water in each feed bucket and it's just about enough for a scoop! So one scoop = 1 bucket, same as S.B.

Thanks everyone!

Silmarillion - haha thanks you've filled me with bags of confidence as to what my mares behaviour might be like in a couple of weeks time............

Nikki - thanks, was bit concerned as our yard owner hasn't been soaking it when she feeds her at lunch that it might of caused her problems, I swear I worry to much!

Mat/LI54 - I think the warm water will be reserved for evenings I've rode and she's been good, maybe it'll condition her brain into being good every day......

AS others have said you should soak it. I used Calm & Condition & it did the reverse on my Han x TB & he was loopy. I changed over to Ride & Relax, which is Barley Free, & it worked well.

All those I ever fed it to were far from 'calm' on it!

Defeated the object as they looped about so much they ran any weight gain off.

I soak it, for 10 mins a bit like the speedibeet. Have just started giving it to Blue for the 'condition' part, he doesn't really need calming he's not too mental!

Same here for me. I'm using it for condition and it's doing a pretty good job so far. My mare is quite sane (with enough spark still!

) and her behaviour hasn't changed- no worse and no ploddier.

I use hot water if it's been a really miserable day or she's worked hard and I want to spoil her, but she guzzles it down just as quickly when made up with cold water!

So is it safe to say with the exception on Mceeaw for the majority it's had the opposite effect on there horses?!? Not complaining, not convinced she can get any worse than she is!

Toby_zaphod, does the ride and relax help keep condition on?

Well I use C&C and don't soak it, I make sure it is dampened down in everymeal as stated on the bag but it doesn't mention that soaking is required.

hmmm i never soaked it.... it didnt make my mare loopy and she is a loopy TB type, so shouldnt worry too much i guess its trial and error. I used it more for the condition part though. She didnt change in temprament.

Well I always pour kettle of hot water over my horses feeds to make them soft and bit wet as old horse has poor teeth, therefore feeds need to be soft. Also he was prone to spasmodic colic and since doing it this way have had no problems.

I noticed how the calm and condition expand whilst doing this so always make sure its had 15 mins to cook and expand before feeding, just in case.
