Can anyone recommend a good calmer for a horse on boxrest? I've never used any kind of calmer before so don't really know where to start. I'm anticipating him becoming stressy especially when all the other horses go out, and want to have something on hand to make life easier for us all.

My YO found a stable mirror invaluable for her 3yo on box rest.
I had my boxrested mare (just over 4 months) on So Kalm powder, she started getting hard to handle (she's a 15.3hh middleweight ID X with huge shoulders to barge into you!) after about a month or so. Stuck her on So Kalm and after a week she was SO much better. Obviously she wasn't back to normal as she was still on box rest but she definately calmed down a lot. I used the So Kalm paste when I turned her away as well, ACP did nothing so I dragged her back in, stuck some So Kalm down her, waited half an hour and stuck her back out again... and she grazed quietly. Fab stuff, expensive compared to some (£1.20 ish a day I think) but definately worked on mine.
If you don't know where to start, the best way to do it with calmers is to buy the cheapest and try it. If it doesn't work, buy the next cheapest, and work your way up until you find a good one! Also for box rest valerian would be good to use (I think the Gold Label valerian one is meant to be good).

Our vet put Murph on this when he was on box rest

It either worked really well, or he just wasnt bothered anyway! Worth a go though!

some internet company - think it was about £40 including delivery, make sure you get one with pre-drilled holes. They have to be mounted on a back board aswell, not straight onto the wall.

They are definately worth it tho!

Oh God yes get a mirror. Mine came from the stable mirror shop I think from Ebay. Pre drilled with rounded corners inc postage 4' x 2'6" was about £35. RAPID delivery and very, very effective

Echo Equiliser, YO uses it on her Grade As and I use it on Winnie last year when he was on box rest.
Also use it just before shoes on snoop and winston when he goes hunting.

My mare has just endured 10 weeks of box rest she was calm using lickits, hanging and on the floor - snackit ball, different feed placements eg: grazeon in bucket on floor, main food in manger - several small haynets around the stable. I was dreading the situation as she is not used to being in but kept her occupied and she remained calm throughout. Now she is worse in a small patch in the field!!
