Hope this is the right place for this. Following on from my previous post about Rosie's mare getting over-excited before SJ on Saturday, people were suggesting at the time that they give her something to calm her down a bit. Two questions for you knowledgable peeps:
a) Would a 'calmer' have an adverse effect on her SJ/XC at ODEs? (R's Mum was thinking that horses need a bit of fizz to do those phases successfully) and
b) Would you recommend any particular one? (Obviously needs to be legal)
TIA

We used Steady Neddy for my old horse - adminstered orally via a mouth syringe - worked brillaintly and took the "buzz" off him before competing as the atmospehere really got to him.

Perfectly legal, and you don't have to feed it all the time its a one off calmer when you want t use it.

If you google it, I'm pretrty sure it comes up there.

the one off pastes are ok, but some arent legal for use.

Have you tried a magnesium based one? They arent "calmers" so much, just help the horse to remain in control of them selves, nupa feed is one and its completly legal.

We have one sorted at the moment!!! He's a real sharp cookie but is just so so much more rideable on his current concoction!

He's having the new Blue Chip calmer liquid twice a day adn then in weeks when he's eventing NAF Tempralax (we need to buy shares in this stuff!) twice a day with a double dose on the night before and morning of the event and a syringe dose 4 hours before his dressage. Cannot tell what a difference it has made to him!

Magic calmer from NAF is good, and have also heard fab things about the Blue chip one from a friend who has a very stressy mare! Both are comp legal.

We use Equiliser or Anxi Calm complete which is only used on the day of the event.
Its def made a real difference to my horse, plus YO uses it on her Grade As and wont use anything else.

quick reply
Many thanks everyone. I'll send R a link to this thread so she can see what you all say. I think she really prefers riding horses which are a bit sharp but it's a shame if it messes up their performance at competitions and even worse if they hurt themselves or someone else.

Nupafeed brillant particularly for eventers. I think about 50% of the horses at Badminton used it in 2005. Allows them to keep sufficient energy yet calms the excessive nerves. It has worked very well for my mare.

I've read that magnetic headbands can be really helpful in calming stressy horses. I was going to try one on my last eventer although in the end I sold him before I managed it. They're quite expensive but apparently very effective...

Dubh gets 5* Magicalm which is a god send day to day & my instructor has recommended Nupafeed on top of this 1hour before stressage.

NAF Tempralex is fantastic! Sunny has it for every comp, and without it she can be pretty much unridable although we are gradully weaning her off it! It settles her enough for the dressage but she has enough fizz for the SJ and XC, and it is completely competition legal. We decided to go for it after long talks with an expert so it is not just advice from me! We give it 24hrs before then 1 1/2 hrs before the dressage.

well feel good 30, so kalm plus oral instant paste and topspec calmer made no difference to crazy zakkie for ODE's, although i did use B-kalm paste for hunting once and it really worked!Thats not much help, but i think its trial and error for every horse

Thank you all for your help - will let you know what they decide to use (if anything). It does sound as if it's trial and error and what suits some isn't right for others. First hand experience is so much more useful than trying to sift through all the hard-sell ads on the internet or listening to someone at the tack shop who may or may not know what they're talking about.
