Can any one recomend a calmer for walking out a pony coming off 3 months box rest ?

He is now up to walking for 10 mins a day in hand, We have been using sedalin but i do not want to use this long term, ( also expensive)

Does anyone have any experience of a calmer that works? Any tips or suggestions most welcome. Thanks

My horse has just come off 10 months box rest due to a tendon injury. Ive been using NAF Magic and I do actually think its helped her. Shes Hanoverian/TB and prone to being spooky. After the first couple of days or so shes calmed down no end and I think its to do with the Magic. She has NAF Oestress and I swear by that so do think the calmer works. We are riding out and the only thing that seems to excite her is when we see other horses in fields. Its £20 for the large tub where I get it from.

I resorted to ACP...I hated using it but with the amount of ice adn the height of capriole and levade I was getting while walking in hand I needed it. In the end, I spoke to the vet surgeon who agreed that a bit of turnout would be better - so the first time sedated and after that, without and that has made all the difference.

Have you tried walking you pony unsedated?

Yup resulted in rearing and bucking. which is to be avoided in his condition, he had a drop in his front feet as a result of laminitis and white line disease.

Izzwizz -Thanks for the suggestion re NAF magic, great to hear it worked for you.

nope - I would keep going with the sedalin but gradually decrease the dose as you increase the length of time you are walking in hand. You should be able to wean them off it eventually and as they get used to walking out they should calm down as it becomes less exciting. When mine played up I used to just take her back in and she soon learnt that if she behaved she was allowed to stay out a bit longer!
