Can anyone recommend a good calmer? My big boy seems to be quite nervous, spooky and very sensitive over the last few months so looking to put him on one to take the edge off.

Have been given loads of different ones to try but they all seem to be hit and miss. Is there any one that works for all horses?

Thanks xx

I can recommend RelaxMe - it has worked for my big stressy lad. Its quite expensive, but I hear good recommendations for this one all the time - no point in one that doesn't work. It does take a little time to kick in.

Wish there was one that guaranteed to work....I have used Topspec Calmer recently on my stressy mare following extended box rest and it did take the edge off enough to hand walk her safely (she thought lions were lurking behind every bush!). I had to mix it with apple juice in her feed as she wouldn't entertain it otherwise, even though it is supposed to taste of apples. Did try the Global Herbs Super Calm (recommended by others on our yard) but she just refused to eat it. I think it's trial and error with calmers as some horses respond to magnesium rich ones and others to herbal based formulas.

if you use magnesium it might take up to a week before you start to notice any difference, but a friend of mine had tried everything and perservered and now he thinks its the best thing he's ever tried.

A lot of calmers are based on magnesium, so it's def worth trying straight mag ox first, if this has no effect, I would recommend Cool, Calm & Collected made by Equifeast. This targets different deficiencies and is the only one that has any effect on snip.

I tried mag ox but my mare refused to eat it, so I bought Nupafeed. As its a liquid she cant seem to taste it in her feed and she's really changed for the best.

I have on on Top Spec which works well for her, and another on Magnesium which works well for him!

I'd get samples if poss of all the ones you want to try. Mine just spat out his feed with NAF 5 star Magic in it. He is fussy and can detect Bute at 50 paces, but I thought the calmer would at least be palatable. However, his mare companion wouldn't eat it either and she eats anything ... £33 down the drain and horse definitely NOT calm, when pulling faces and spitting out his treasured dinner :-)
Good luck with finding one that yours will eat in the first place, as if they won't eat it, it won't work!

nupafeed all the time. works on all the horses ive tried it on, strong, hot, spooky, bad tempered, nervous, bad traffic/traveling etc etc, they all eat it and its not too badly priced

Hi this may sound a bit airy fairy but if you can get hold of dried camomile flowers they worked wonders on my coloured gelding as he didn't respond to anything magnesium based. They should be around £10 per bag which lasts about 3 weeks

If you go on e Bay they are much cheaper, I have just bought some, also they came the next day.

ProKalm, by Science Supplements. Would highly recommend it.

They do a trial sample sachet for about £10 I think, and you get a good few scoops out of it to give it a proper go. If you call to order, they reduced the p&p for me when all I wanted was one sachet.

If you do a search for it on here, or on the New Rider forum, I think there are old threads about it too :)

I've been using Comfort Gut with my horse for the past 3 months, all i can say is Absolutely Amazing!!!! the difference in my horse i can hardly describe. Even better it has no chemicals or false stuff. Had to get it of ebay though, but it comes really quick in the post!

It is expensive but ive just tried Nupafeed and its made such a difference. I just got the small bottle to try , you do have to do a loading dose so the bottle doesnt last long, but i though if it doesnt make a difference then i wouldnt buy any more.

My big lad has totally relaxed compared to how he was a few weeks ago. He was wild but now he is much happier and not over reacting to things. He wont be on it long term so im looking at it that way, its just to get us through the spring wildness!!

I've got one on TopSpec (TB) and that works well, and for the other Brewer's Yeast takes the edge off sufficiently whilst also tackling his itchyness.

I'd add to the Nupafeed recommendations. We use it for Big Ginger Lad and it's the only thing that works on him. Takes about 3 days of the loading dose. We visited a race yard (he's an ex Nat Hunt racer) and that's what they use there. A few others on the yard use it too and have have similarly good results. Quite pricey but worth it IMO.

I had my mare on pure magnesium & it worked better than anything i had paid good money for & is a fraction of the price!
I also gave some to a friend to try her boy on as he was getting very excitable & she said it worked wonders on him too.

I would recommend it to anyone. There is no point paying a fortune for expensive mixtures when its really only the magnesium part that is used to calm them anyway!

Good luck :D
