Calmer recommendation?

Hello,

I'm looking for a calmer for my mare, shes fine under saddle happily perky, but seems to struggle to settle in most other parts of life! Very unsettled in stable, unsettled in turnout, fine and pleasant if shes doing something but I'd describe it as she just cant seem to relax or switch her brain off at rest.

Has anyone used a calmer successfully? Currently on blue chip Karma and has been for 10 days so may be too early to tell, but no real difference so far.

Thanks

Hi Ramsaybailey- I’m watching this post with great interest as you are describing exactly the issues I’m having with my mare!
ive tried Global herbs Supercalm which didn’t seem to help, been looking at Quiet life Calmer which seems to have some promising reviews with mares so I might give that a try. Will be interesting to see what others have to say though.

Since autumn I’ve been using the “improved” Magic calmer after an episode or two of my WB being a knob when ridden and I do feel it’s taken the edge off. He’s a spooky twat to ride usually anyway but was extra twatty at the time . Could be psychological on my part but it’s working in one way or another.

Maybe she's reactive due to an intolerance to something in her feed?

Yes could be a possibility, shes just on alfalfa dengie molasses free chaff and and dengie basic balancer. Shes had issues with ulcers in the past and is showing none of her ulcer symptoms and seems good on the digestion front so I'm reluctant to change/experiment with her feed, ideally would just like something to calm her mind if there is such a thing

I think you're answers may lie right here.
Many horses incl mine simply cannot tolerate alfalfa. Indeed, mine is completely unmanageable on alfalfa.
Ulcers often return. Mine is predisposed to ulcers, with them regularly returning. Vets recommmended feeding alfalfa to help the ulcers which was a huge mistake and resulted in a (verging on) dangerous horse. You need to look at the bigger picture (including lifestyle/ management/feed to work ratio, company etc etc) before looking at 'calmers' (which have little scientific backing).
