Hi, I have a 15.2hh cob gelding 8yrs old. To handle on the ground he is a saint, but he is very changeable to ride. He was driven as a youngster probably as a 2yr old!! He isn't the most well schooled horse and we have a lot of work to do. He dosen't overly enjoy schooling and tends to rush and become unbalanced. In some ways he is very good to hack perfect with any kind of traffic, although the wrong shade of leaf/tree or concrete can give him the hebe-gebees but our problem is, more often than not he rushes and does a super fast trot, i keep trying different tactics to steady him up but somedays he will slow down another he just wants to belt along the road. Canter is the same, yet on another day or even the same day he can do a lovely steady trot or canter.

So although i know the route of our problm is schooling, i wondered if anyone could recommend a calmer i could use that may help him chill on his excitable days but not making dopey when he is calm. I was looking for somethig to use over several months or longer.

Many thanks and sorry for the essay

Hi, you could try global herbs that really helped my arab x calm down, I managed to get him working well and after a couple of tubs started to wean him off it, it just took the edge off him, so he concentrated more.
You could also try some pole and circle work to slow him down and think about what he's doing, but dont let him race around, bring him back to walk then a few strides of trot and back to walk again, and so on.
I used to have a cob who was the same and I put him in a pelham with two reins and although i ride very lightly with my hands, having the extra bit of poll leverage helped bring him back to me when he was running off.
hope that helps a little

Thanks, have you been using supercalm or magcalm? I have tried some of your riding suggestions and he is now in a pelham, which he prefers to a snaffle, only using one rein and roundings so will try two reins.

I can't fault Global herbs and i have practically tried everyone out there for my mental TB x mare! I use the tb calmer version in their range as she is v fine and it suits her. I use the supercalm sachets for competitions,my friends similar mare is on the supercalm supplement and she too has tried loads and won't ever change from this make.

My feed merchant stocky many different brands buy highly recommends Global Herbs.

My vet told me that the magnesium based ones will only work for a horse that has an actual magensium defficiency. To avoid forking out for one, try epsom salts (magnesium sulphate!) for a few days to see if they make a difference. If yes, go for one like Magic, etc.

I think your hacking issues will be helped once you have got your schooling sorted out. I would be tempted to go down the route of getting a good instructor before paying out for a calmer.
