Not sure where to post his. My young horse (mare) is very hyperactive, also very mild headshaker, and generally a bit over sensitive (hot, itchy). She is on a Magnesium supplement and brewers yeast and sugar free diet. Yesterday she had a dose of B Kalm prior to going to a competiion. Not sure if it helped at actual show (though we did win

), though she was definitely better travelling home and last night. However tonight she was crazy mad . She had the day off out in the field but was very hyper when she came in, bucking in stable, kicking wall, pawing. Could this be a rebound effect from the calmer? I know it is tryptophan based, so if she is deficient in this could the fact that she had one dose make her better then worse? Should I try her on low regular dose? Any one else experienced this?

Sorry not an answer to your question but just wanted to mention that I tried Brewers Yeast as a calmer and it had the opposite effect. My horse definately became spookier and more irrational in the 4 weeks I tried it for.

The mare in question is a right floosy, I think she would easily find a way to fund her habit!

Re: Brewers yeast, that is interesing, never heard of horses reacting badly to this, all different I guess. I think someone is sneaking mine blue smarties during the night.....

What you've got to consider when you have a stressy/excitable horse is why the horse is like this - If the horse is magnesium deficient then a mag calmer will improve the horse's behaviour - If the horse doesn't require b vits (which essentially is what brewers yeast includes) then the horse could be overexcitable - if you think about the "go faster" supplements on the market these include a combination of B-Vits which give the horse a boost - It may be worth considering whether your horse has digestive upsets which make it fizzy - By calming the gut you inturn calm the horse

H's mum - that is interesting - maybe she had B vit overload as the B Calm contains this too I think as does her Magnesium supplement.

I don't think there are digestive issues, everything very regular and consistent, she is on mainly forage diet with loads of time at grass. She is not really stressy, just over energetic (trainer calls her the duracell bunny). I think she is like it because that is how she is.

I may take her off the brewers yeast for a while and see.
