hey guys :)

of to the tack shop in a few hours to get my neddy a calmer, but there is just soooooo much choice !! so i was hoping you could help :)

im wanting to get something that i can fed him daily in his fed, he can be very spooky, but this is because he lacks confidence, i can hack him out with in company and he is ok, but on his own he lacks confidence

also when i am leading him from the field he will often hide behind me as he scared,

so really i just want something to take the edge of him, i am thinking a magnesium based one would work for him

with so much choice i am at a bit of a loss i have been considering

1. super calm global herbs
2. mag calm global herbs
3. magnitude equine America
4. blue chip karma
5. top spec calmer
6. nupafeed
7. naf magic

any advice appreciated :)

A magnesium based calmer will only work if your horse is actually magnesium deficient.

It might be worth getting a soil analysis done to establish if your grazing is deficient or not before splashing out on a calmer. It might be worth giving epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) for a few days to see if that has any effect.

I use Dodson and Horrel Placid with mine when he gets stressy. It is a herb mix and has some magnesium added. I think it works well just to dejangle his nerves. He isn't a hot headed breed, just a Haflinger.

I use Magnitude from Equine America for my Andalusian, not sure if it is working or if it is just him settling down, but it does him no harm since it it pure - no fillers or junk (that's what the saleslady told me, they had all sorts but she said this is the purest). Will see how he is when the tub runs out.

i'd tried magnesium based calmers with no effect at all, on two horses. i now hve my boy on brewers yeast, originally it was to help his sensitive tummy, which it hasnt, but he is soooooooooo laid back and controllable he's like a different horse, so i'm not gonna stop giving it to him now. i've not been tanked off with for months and he's stopped his excitable pre-gallop rearing. altho i think its a knock on effect, that now he's less excitable, i feel more confident, which he has picked up on so doesnt take the pee anymore.
