I'm not riding my horse at the moment as I'm due to give birth in a month. YO is riding for me, but horse is being a bit of a sod. He has valerian, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend other calmers to try? He is very sharp and spooky and can be really grouchy and bad tempered too (not all the time, I hasten to add). I'd just like there not to be any "issues" whilst someone else is riding him!!!

I've had success with Steady-up with a variety of horses over the years. I think different horses respond to different calmers so it is difficult to find one that will work without trying a couple on your horse.

i used EX STRESS with sucsess but this week a horse pysio recomended camomile tea would you believe!? you just make it up with a tea bag and leave for horse to drink and eat the tea bag. worth a go as it is a cheap option - we could have a tried and tested with it on here if anyones interested???

I think the tried and tested is an excellent idea.

No - no specific brand - but we need to use the same one so that is probably as good as any.
can we put a post up so those who want to join in can add their names

Yeah think different horses respond to different ones, I've used Naf Magic with some success on my mare, So-Kalm Plus worked ok on my gelding. Just got a tub of Top-Spec Calmer to try on my mare on box rest as it seemed cheaper than most of them and I remember it had a good effect on a Point 2 Pointer I used to ride out.

If you need something which works almost immediately, i.e. to calm a horse to load or pacify a youngster at a show, try Bach's Rescue Remedy - a few drops given in a small handful of coarse mix. It works a treat and you can't over-dose on it.

Super solvitax calming formula is excellent, it also contains camomile. It seems that magnesium based products work better on mares than on geldings, not sure why this is but does seem to be the case in my experience.

In the past I have had good results with steady up and the only thing that worked on Fleur was so kalm.

Have heard good things about nufafeed's calmer - both feed and paste, but have to say their energy booster paste didn't do anything for Chancer - think I'll have to resort to the rocket up his a*rse for in hand showing spark

I've been using Magic on my 6 yo gelding...everyone at the yard recommended it & I think it worked a little bit...only thing is he leaves more than he eats & has become picky with his food (tried making it wetter & he hardly touched it). I've come to the conclusion he doesn't like the taste so am going to give Super Solvitax Calmer or Blue Chip Karma a go (being liquid, he cant leave it!). If anyone has experience of these two or any other liquids I would appreciate your input!

Topspec calmer is fab, the only one I found that really works without making my horse into a donkey. Tried Equine America So Kalm paste which works but he looked like he'd had Sedalin, he was so chilled out!

All NAF calmers are a rubbish, don't waste your money on those!

I looked at the TopSpec range but am reluctant about feeding another dry supplement....it's blooming expensive stuff to have him leave at the bottom of the feed tub! I know it says it's apple flavoured.....I take it you didn't have any problems with your horse eating it?

Im on my 4th week of Topspec calmer and I really think its made him less anxious. Hes a real wally and gets in a tiz over stupid things. Hes not a zombie, totally the same horse just much less anxious. He did think I was poisoning him at first though, sniffing his feed before he ate it for a few days but hes fine now. It smells very brewers yeast to me and you have to feed quite a large amount but my boy is very fussy and is eating it fine.

No. I feed all my feeds damp though so you just mix it in well (Topspec tell you to feed it damp). He is quite a greedy pony though, the only thing he won't take in food is bute and that Pramox wormer as he thinks I'm trying to poison him.

Oh, and he refused to eat NAF Magic til I gave him it in sugar beet....
