Hi all,

So a very cute section a mare has come back for the summer and her paddock backs onto ours.

The problem my boy keeps running at the fence to get to her and beating up his field mates if they go near her, this is his usual behaviour towards mares he got in with one once and almost killed her so needless to say there is a perimeter fence 1 meter away from the original fence.

Now I got on him yesterday and he was Bonkers - he's usually slightly strong but he was the worst he's ever been stamping his feet, rearing, trying to bolt etc he was very naughty and It is all down to this mare.

He wasn't gelded too late - 4 years old.

I was thinking of trying him on vetvits equi calm? will this calm him down enough that he's not thinking about this mare all the time?

any suggestions :) or cheaper alternatives?
thanks

If you find one, let me know.

My gelding is nuts about my friends mare. He was gelded as a 10yr old (before I bought him) and he is a pain in the backside when at event's with her, although she is just as bad as he is.

This weekend they were at an event together and we had not choice but to travel them together and put them in the same yard. It was horrible. He was bucking and being a tool when I worked him on Friday, Sat he did a good dressage test after being warmed up away from "his" mare (and getting the bucking out of his system in warm up), Show Jumping he got us eliminated. He never refuses a jump and he refused 3 times.

I don't have any advice OP but I feel your pain! :)

Ugh sounds exactly like my boy! Shows are awful he nearly sat on some spectators once.. very embarrassing I can tell you while he was up in the air I politely asked them to move :D

Wish me luck today.... hopefully I will come back from our 'gentle' hack unscathed aha.

Hi global herbs rig calm is amazing, but the main ingredient of it is agnus castus. So I buy agnus castus on its own, £9 for 1kg from eBay. You may want to get the powder form though instead of the berries as its slightly more stronger. It helps a lot with my boy who's way to fixated on my mums mare.

Another one for rig calm here. And as Snorkey says, you could buy the main ingredient by itself as cheaper. I haven't but will do next when I run out of global herbs.
Having said that 30 quid was still far cheaper than the likely vets bill I was heading for, the way my riggy boy was carrying on towards my other gelding in the presence of an in season mare...

Another fan of rig calm... Worked within days, very effective. I have also heard that the agnus castus has the same effect x

My boy was a rig when I brought him, and was awful (didn't know until I got him home for a few days). He was very aggressive, biting, striking, rearing up and boxing at you while leading him. Went out with a gelding in the field when we didn't know he was a rig and he tried to kill him. Tried to mount my friends mare on a hack. We put him on cushy life james hart, it was amazing really calmed him down, and I could then lead him in a bridle instead of a chifney. And the biting, striking, and rearing almost stopped. He was on it for about 2 months before he had surgery and then about 6 months after ( when he had both his testicals taken out his stomach). We took him off it about 3 months after his surgery for a couple of days with out telling my friend ( as we throught he would be fine) who occassionally brought him in from the field, and she could see a big difference in his behaviour biting, striking and rearing again, so that proved it really worked well on him and he went straight back on it.

Another vote for Rig Calm :D my mum's section D is on it, and is now so laid back my yearling eats his bucket with him, and I also know a gelding that was cut late that's on it

I used to use rig calm at £22 a tub, but the main ingredient is agnus castus so i just bought that at about a third of the price and it does him fine!
