Sorry, yet another calmer post.

What, if anything, would be the best type of calmer to feed a horse for anxiety problems? He is fine in stable, field, and not in the slightest fizzy, he just has confidence issues.

Dont mean to be rude but I am not looking for advice on dealing with his issues, just a calmer that would perhaps relax him but not turn him into a dope that wont move.

I have tried TopSpec Calmer, made no difference at all.

I honestly don't believe you can calm a horse without some sedation, and don't believe in herbal remedies. Magnesium can have some effect on muscle contraction, but it can have some nasty side effects in humans.

Sorry to hijack but what nasty effects can it have in humans? Just out of interest - I feed my boy magnesium and it has chilled him out. I also have been using the Forest Farmacy natural calmers which I do believe have had an effect on both me and my horse. Again, he is not fizzy or naught just gets quite tense and spooky!

Difficult to really say which is best for 'confidence' as opposed to calming...
I am using global herbs supercalm on my horse...not cos of being fizzy or anything (she is retired) but just to see if it helps her as she can get stressed at times and turning her out can be a problem...I dont want her personality affected but to help her anxiousness at times. Believe me we have looked at everything possible...and thought we would give this a try!!!
I found global herbs very helpful when I phoned up...others weren't really despite that I was going to purchase their product!!!
As I understand (from medical view) magnesium will only have an affect if the horse is actually lacking in it...otherwise the horses system just disregards the excess ie. pees it out!!!
I am slightly cynical about it all...but I do think my mare has seemed less likely to have a bout of this panicking but still alert but without the drama...but being unpredictable who knows!!!!
My YO is now going to wean her off it and see if I notice any difference...I wont know when she has finished it...so we could see if any change due to it.

I found a magnesium supplement to be very helpful and I could see a difference, as described on the product website, within the time stated (even within a few days but clearly within a month) so to me it seems like money worth spending. I am sure it does not suit every horse though.

Kildalton- also interested in the human side effects please.

Magnesium did nothing for my horse. Started on Brewers yeast a few weeks ago but now he is on box rest so can't really comment on if that works either. Sorry not much use! Lots on here say Blue Chip calmer is good for chilling out???....

I noticed no difference with Top Spec Calmer either. Am currently having great success with Global Herbs Supercalm.
