What a minefield the world of calmers seems to be!

I have sorted out my weeks holiday with my horse for August, but I am concerned that he might find it all too stressful and not enjoy what is supposed to be a week of fun for the both of us.

He finds new situations (and sometimes daily life) very exciting and can work himself up to the point where there is no communicating with him no matter how relaxed and calm I keep myself.

I'm not sure where to start as there seem so many different options on the market and I've heard mixed reviews on the effectiveness of magnesium based calmers. In addition, he is tollerant to ACP's and Sedalin!!!

I want to start with it soon, so I have time to ensure it works and that I have the correct dosage. Any suggestions??? :-S

I have a TB who gets very stressed when taken out of his normal routine. When I moved him to my current yard, I was recommended Global Herbs Instant Super Calm sachets, they were so amazing I then went out and bought the tub and kept him on that the first couple of months :)

You may need cal mag. It can be bought on an aution site. It doesn't calm your horse as such, but replaces an essential mineral that they are often short of and should be but is not in the overgrazed rye grass.

It has turned many a stressy idiot into a horse that thinks!

I used Magic syringe for my boy for shows they honestly worked! And I'm a great non believer of the millions of supplements out there!

I use equine America magnitude daily for my stressy mare. I tried naf instant magic for a top up but she hated the taste so much she wouldn't eat it no matter what we disguised it with!

I have recently put my horse on brewers yeast and has definitely helped - he will still have the occasional silly moment but in general is a lot more settled.

I don't really understand the science behind it but the calming properties come from the vit 'b' s, and also has made his coat beautiful.

I tried him on magnesium but found it had no affect, so can only assume that he was getting adequate mag in his grazing.

It is a lot cheaper than commercial calmers so may be worth a google....

with you on the Magnesium I've tried the Magic Syringes for shows etc but they have never had any effect, but wondered if that was down to not having built up sufficient dosage. However, I have just thought to check the magnesium quantity in his formula 4 feet and from I can see he's getting an adequate dosage.

So will take a look at Brewers yeast and Global Herbs...

Thanks everyone ... sure I'll get there in the end! Would just love to be able to take him out or even for a hack on his own and have a chilled horse, rather than one jumping at his own shadow!!!

I recently had a problem with my mare traveling. She would load fine and walks off the trailer as calm as ever. It is just the bit in-between when she panics.

I was recommended to use Nupafeed Calmer. I gave her the loading dose and when I wanted to travel her I gave her the syringe.

We traveled her down to Exmoor to compete in the Golden Horse Shoe a journey of 160 miles. Not once was there be any trouble. I followed the trailer and saw no problem.

I would highly recommend the Nupafeed calmer.http://www.nupafeed.co.uk/index.htm?oc=rel&di=desc&subj=liquidcalmer

In the interests of getting started sooner rather than later, I'm just about to head off to the local saddlery and get some Global Herbs Calmer - see how we get on with that and if not I have plenty of other suggestions to try. Thank you again everyone!
