Does anyone know of a calmer (that works!) that can be used on an occaisional basis i.e. before stressful situations/competitions etc?

I have a young horse who was previously neglected and very roughly treated, and whilst most of the time he is so laid back he is almost backwards there are certain things that seem to remind him of past times and he completely flips. I have had him a while now and know what will and won't set him off and would like to be able to give him something before hand just to take the edge off him.

I have tried him on several calmers that you take conitiuously and as he most of the time very chilled i can't see any difference and he still has his 'scary' episodes. So i would rather not have to pay for a supplement that he has all the time but doesn't need.

any ideas?

Have you tried Rescue Remedy? It doesn't work on all, but it does on some and you can even take it yourself. either a few drops or squirts on the tounge or lip just before sometimes works.

However a horses memory is a long one and in some cases nothing will prevent them from exploding.

We have used SoKalm paste with good results. It comes in a syringe from tack shops that sell Equine America products e.g. Cortaflex.

another vote for so calm (well i thinks thats what it is) its made by eqine america and it last 2/3 events dependent on how much calming effect you want!! Worked wonders on my slightly mental ex racer when we BE evented we went from 50 dressage to 36!!

Oxyshot, but we have a very quirky mare so not totally sure if it works or if she is having a "good day"! I also dont want to shell out for something all the time if I'm not sure if it 's doing any good.

definitely Oxyshot! The only thing that works on a one-off basis as far as I am concerned! To make it cheaper, buy the refills and use your own 'syringe' rather than buying in pre filled syringes.
Works like magic on our connemara who gets very tense in the dressage phase of eventing - and also for travelling if they get stressed.

Hi, I used global herbs supa calm sachets, you feed one a couple of hours before you need it and there GREAT!
My very nervous horse went from being barley rideable to showing at county level, trouble is im now looking for something I can use every day!
They are about £12 for 6.
