Im looking for a calmer recommendation.
I know, I know! this subject has been done to death lol! but all the posts I see are to help horses that are stressy in the stable/drop weight etc....well my horse isnt like that so was hoping someone might have a calmer recommendation if I get more specific!
On the ground, Finn is a love. A bit of a dobbin almost. Doesnt have any stable vices, doesnt drop weight, and is generally mr laid back low matienence! He can sometimes have a eyes on stalks moment walking past a haylage bale on the way to the field, but once past it he reverts to Mr normal again!
The problem is ridden. In the school he always seems to be looking for something to spook at and when he does is very sharp in his reactions and can drop a shoulder quite spectacularly and 9 times out of 10 that will get me off! he also can do this out hackin, normally a big spook then a spin hence throughing me out the side door before I can take any evasive action!
Yet other days he'll happily toddle along being the lead for an ex-racer! There is noooooooo consistency with Finn at all, which makes its quite difficult as he can have 3 days of spooky sillyness followed by 4 weeks of excellent behaviour or vice versa!
This behaviour is with any rider, although it certainly does shake my confidence so am sure I am heightening it sometimes.
Hes a 10yr old ID x TB, hes on fibre pencils and good doer, is turned out for at least 8hrs a day, stabled at night, ridden 3/4 times a week.....so it isnt an overfed/underworked situation. And all the back/teeth/tack/physio aspects have been checked and deemed fine.
I do think in the school at times it can be evasiveness that hes learned has worked! But I just cant relax on him unless the risk of the big spooks and shooting forward is massively diminished, but then he can behave for weeks so there has been times im very relaxed on him yet he'll still chuck in a spook and spin!
so would a calmer help for ridden problems? can I calm his quirks??
