I was just wondering who used calmers for their horses and why???

Grace has been much better when Hannah goes out, but sometimes she can just lose the plot and startr screaming and screaming to the point that she gets herself so worked up! I was wondering whether a calmer would help her with her separation anxiety (she has a mirror already) but I don't really want her to lose her impulsion in the school.

Thanks,

Rebecca x

Slightly different reason for use, but my friends horse (the one I ride) responded very well to a magnesium based global herbs calmer called Magcalm.

He was very tense in general though, and was also a bit obsessed with the mares (we think he may have been cut late). He is now no longer on it, but doesn't need it! It helped when he was at his "highest" so to speak

Since this one was brought out there have been a few magnesium based calmers put on the market.

echo magcalm - for when all else fails! But my horse is on the one down from that which is supercalm. Fantastic stuff but beware if you take them off it!! Once you start you have to stick to regular programme otherwise you upset the system. I ran out of cash to buy one one week, so she went off it for a week or so.. she was transformed into evil ned, so I found the money!!! lol. Just goes to show they respond to routine and change.

imo i think you just need to leave her to get used to it. she'l soon calm down in her own time.

Archie still has the odd day when he flips out in his stable when other horses leave - he literally throws himself at his stable door and trys to get out over the top, luckily he cant as all our stables have antiweave grills. Im sure he will totally get over it eventually.

imo i dont really agree with calmers either, i just dont see the point - i hasten to add thats my view before anyone jumps down my throat about that comment!!

My trainer advised me to use Placid to keep my mare calm for dressage. She has been on this for a year now and its brilliant - plus its all natural herbs, camomile etc.

i feed Chantin Equiliser from the vets - really good stuff and within a couple of weeks I managed to keep her on half the recommended dose.
She used to be really violent if the other horses left her. She also used to stress so much that within 5 minutes she was dripping from head to toe with sweat.
Think its about £35 a tub but lasted me quite a while
