Hello,

Can anyone recommend a good 'calmer' for a teenage mare? Also, has anyone any feeding tips for keeping a horse as calm as poss? I read many moons ago that an excess of sugar can cause livelyness (mollychop and sugar beet) and was wondering if anyone had any experience in this...

Does your mare 'need' hard feed - maybe try taking her off hard feed for a while and feeding ad lib hay and small amount of chaff with a vitamin supplement in first to see if it helps before going down the calmer route? x

try a low starch diet as this can hype horses up and try any feed with added magnesium as this can have a calming affect. cubes are less heating than mix and beet.

Try to keep feed as basic as possible. feed only what is needed to keep condition and enough energy for the work you want to do.

My 16 year old can be very exitable and silly. I have tried Naff Magic that did not do anything for her (tried it for 2 months) and she is now on Equine America So Kalm Plus with Magnesium and I think that it is having an effect. She has been on it for a month now and does seem better at times, its not a dramatic difference but a noticable one.

I think that her food is pretty non heating. She has hay twice a day, 1 scoop Alfa A with 1/2 a scoop of 16+ twice a day. She will soon start having Speedibeet as well to maintain her during the winter.

You have just got to try each one and see if it works for your mare. Good luck

My horse goes mad on molychaff due to mollases. I feed Dengie Alpha A oil (mollasses free) I also feed betamag 12 which is a magnesium calmer and it helps.

My mare can be a bit silly and i have her on Magnesium from Holland & Barratt. (Magnesium is the main ingredient in 'most' calmers)
I get 200 tablets for about £7 something and she has about 4-5 a day so they last ages and a lot of the time they are on offer!
My mare is also a Head Shaker and the magnesium does make a difference with her but she also has Honey in her feed, but it must be local honey.
Good Luck
