Hi Guys,

I have recently move my mare to a new busyish yard - understandably she is a bit excited at the moment.

She rears in her stable when something goes on ie another horse comes or goes off the yard pushing against her door. When i tie her up in the mornings out side her stable, she attempts to rear, pours the floor and fidgets like mad!! I understand this is all new to her and needs to settle into a routine but she has never been the best to tie up! Also she has always been a 'firey' little thing.. someone suggest magnesium oxide, has anyone used this before? If not any other things i could try?

Thank you :)

I used blue chip calmer for my boy, it worked great but then I realised it was a change in food that had made him half wild so I changed that and then no longer needed it.

Magnesium oxide does not actually calm a horse (you need Sedalin for that ;)).

Magnesium oxide deficiency is common and symptoms can include anxiety, muscle pain, hoof soreness......So if you feed mag ox and the horse appears better - it's just that they are not feeling crappy any more!

It sounds like your mare is suffering with separation anxiety and is struggling to adapt to a new place. I would be looking at feeding something to keep her gut happy, as stress can cause havoc to the gut. Some Protexin may be a good idea for a few weeks until she settles. And lay off anything molassed ;)

Agreed! (Where's a 'like' button when you need one!?)
