I've tryed Global Herbs Thoroughbred calmer and Blue Chip Kalmer but don't think either have worked, the only thing that seems to help is riding her almost every day. Shes a very spooky and hypo ex racer and we do hacking and dressage.
I am using nupafeed with George at the moment, he isn't particularly sharp or anything but he does get anxious at times and it does (touch wood) seem to be helping. It was recommended to me by my instructor.
Used to use Topspec calmer on my Welshy. Did a bit of everything and not a lot of anything with him. Tried NAF Magic and the old NAF liquid one, neither of which worked. The Topspec one is great.
Tried Naf Magic and Dodson and Horrells Placid and didn't think much to them, now on Global Herbs Thoroughbred calmer and it seems to be working!!! Think it depends on your individual horse, as some calmers don't seem to work on all horses
You need to assess whether your horse has a magnesium deficiency. If it does, then feeding pure calcinated magnesium (like Mag-ox) is the best calmer - all the magnesium based ones are less effective due to the magnesium levels. You can get it from ebay and it is much cheaper than the usual magnesium calmers.
If your horse does not have a magnesium deficiency, then you move onto all the herbals ones. I have tried everything with one of mine - some things made him worse (brewer's yeast - never again) or the same. The only thing to have any effect whatsoever is the Global Herbs TB calmer and I recommend this to everyone.
He is quite fit at the moment, and i even hacked him out across a field (in walk) in the winds yesterday and yes we got a bit of jogging when we reached "the canter spot" but nothing like the usual running off I would have had last year (even when he was unfit). He listened to my seat instead of going into a zombie trance. He is much better in the school as well and concentrates on his work rather than finding things to spook at. To prove a point, I took him off it and within 3 days I had a lunatic so put him straight back on at the loading rate and he was "calm" again. Although being a fittish TBxArab he isnt exactly going to be a plod.
He really seems to like the taste as well. There is definitely some magnesium in there (you can see the powder become magnetised on the spoon) but there is other stuff in there that appears to be working. I havent tried nupafeed or cool, calm and collected which was next on the list of things to try.
Have tried naf magic, didnt work at all. Once tried be-kalm paste for a sponsored ride ahh never again. Had the complete opposite effect, it was like giving a child a bag of sweets full of E numbers!! The best one I have found is super solvitax calming formula. Worked for my TB and also everyone else I know that has used it says it works on their horses too!
I use NAF Magic. I was fed up of my mare just spooking an dlooking at everything in the outdoor. However when she is on this stuff it just seems to take the edge off her and chill her out. She still looks at me but she doesn't bomb off when she spooks anymore
