Calor gas hob/grill in horsebox

I've just bought a horsebox, but the lady I bought it from had never used the gas hob and grill so couldn't show me how to turn on the calor gas bottle.

It's tucked away under the lorry, near the battery, so not easy to see it, and it also has a nice covering of mud!

So can anyone give me an explanation of what we need to turn, twist or something to turn on the gas supply so I can get the cooker to work?

Gas needs servicing/checking every so often and I would get it checked out by a professional before you use it- caravan place, there's lots in essex. The pipe can perish, so ultimately even if you do manage to get enough gas to the grill it could end up with everything in toast!!

The gas bottle if a small one will have a screw top, if a larger one the regulator will be what turns it on.
 
Thanks for that. How often do they need servicing do you know? I think it must have a regulator on it as there is something on the top - it's a blue bottle anyway.

Should we just take the bottle off and take it to a caravan place? It seems to be strapped in place somehow but is so dirty and mucky that it won't hurt to take it off and clean it up I suppose.
 
Hi, its not so much the bottle but the pipe work from the bottle to the appliances that may need checking. They do perish, Im sure my bottle is connected by a regulated then there is a 'switch' which you turn to release the gas or turn off before using the cooker.
 
I would book your lorry in for a check, not sure where you are in Essex?

Basically, the bottle should be strapped down, mine has metal strips that had seized on and needed a clean off and plenty of wd40 before the bolts would undo. The pipe that goes from the bottle to the hob is the potential problem, if its damaged then gas will leak. The pipes are inexpensive and mostly fixed on using jubilee clips.

I get mine checked every few years and visually check it over myself every few months. The gas bottle tends to last a long time (we only use it if we are away or for a kettle) and it usually runs out when we are away (and have the probelm of getting it off or not eating!) But we also work on a basis of better safe than sorry!

Oh, and we always turn the gas off at the bottle when we are travelling.
 
Right - let's start again - it's the pipe work that needs servicing, not the bottle? I'm a bit confused now.

I can see most of the pipe as it just loops up under the lorry and then disappears up in to the back of the cooker. It looks to be in good condition, but I will clean it off next time we are there and have a proper inspection. Because Calor gas has quite a strong smell, we will be able to have a good sniff underneath the lorry when the hob is on to see if there are any leaks. I would imagine the more exposed part of the pipe would be most likely to perish because it is exposed on the underside of the lorry?
 
When you say book my lorry in for a check, do you mean for the gas hob/pipe? I've had the lorry inspected mechanically and electrically before buying it, but am pretty sure that didn't include a calor gas cooker check!

Where would I take it? I've just done a Google search but can't find anything obvious. I'm near the Essex/Suffolk border. Hubby quite handy with stuff so he could easily fit a new hose for me if that's all that is needed.
 
Its the hose and the appliance that need checking, not the bottle.

Yes if your husband is quite handy he can check the pipe but I'd bet the hob/grill has never been checked?

Best thing is to ring a calor specialist - or a horsebox fitter - you've got thorpe horseboxes, priory stud or EA horseboxes are near sudbury. There are lots of caravan places, they will do calor and can advise you (mine was simply checked over by a caravan place and the hob needed a new burner so they swapped that at the same time)

Aha! I get it now. Although I keep hearing that the regulator needs checking too, and that is on the bottle I think not the cooker?

I'll give them a call and find out more. Thank you.
