Hi, I use a Sony Handycam and find it really easy to use. I bought it to go on holiday with as its nice and lightweight. You can also take photos on it. I think it cost around £250 ish from Amazon. I'm no expert though but find that it does what I want really well.
For recording show jumping you need one with a good optical zoom so you can get in closer when the subject is on the other side of the arena. Steer clear from those very cheap ones that only have a digital zoom, they are pathetic & the picture pixelates.
I use one very similar to the one on the link below. It has a 40x optical zoom, which is a massive zoom & they are very easy to use..... if I can use one then anyone can. It is digital, the tapes are reasonably priced & quality of recording is good. The price is very reasonable as well. I doubt if you'll find one much cheaper. Good Luck
