Anyone else see that last night? He was jumping in the Christmas pudding stakes at Olympia and was on a beautiful clear round. Last fence, some idiot took a photo, flash went off and horse spooked slightly over the fence and had it down. How many times are we asked at Olympia NOT to use flash cameras? Totally undeserved by horse and rider. I know we all would like personal photos of our heros, but that cost Nick SKelton a place in the JO.

It really bothers me! When I take pictures, I always turn the flash off and hold it down for good measure! I hate seeing flashes go off time and time and time again even though they tell us over and over "DO NOT USE FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!"

They reran it on Eurosport so I wasn't imaging it...as horse goes to jump, flash goes off and horse clearly spooks as he is jumping and has a rail down. It was textbook upto that.

I didn't see but I remember at Olympia in 2006 there were a lot of cam's going off. I know it's a hard thing to enforce, but honestly why do people not understand? I can understand the odd one accidentally going off, but I'm surprises it's not policed *somehow* a bit better.
If I were a rider, I would be insanely annoyed if I felt my horse react to a flash. As a spectator, affecting the sport is shameful.

totally out of order. Nick looked furious! Prob cost him the class and a few grand!

How would the idiot feel that flashed their camera if they had a few grand snatched from their reach!

The stupid thing is that a flash is useless in that sort of environment anyway so the picture would have been rubbish.

At times like that the stewards should step in and ask for that person to be evicted from the stadium or even the commentator to ask them to leave and tell them why (in case they are stupid enough not to know themselves and also give others fair warning of what will happen to them too) At times like that I'd expect their neighbours to willingly point the fingure - and no getting away with it if it's a child either. People should know it will not be tolerated.

It is stuff like this that leads to cameras being banned full stop which is a shame for everyone. Having personally told people off for using flash photography when it is banned it really bloody irritates me, I will happily tell people off if I see them doing it and I wish others would too, staff can't be everywhere.

My OH and Dad are both keen photographers and always ask when we arrive at places what the rules are on photography and stick to them, sadly if people continue to ignore rules banning flash photography more and more places will ban photography altogether.

Alyth, i agree that by and large they should not be taking any notice of the crowd, but horses are not machines and however experienced they are at their job a bright light flashing in their face is easily enough to make them flinch and drop a leg.
Could you carry on with a task you had done a 100 times before, and do it perfectly if a flash affected your vision. I very much doubt that you could!

LOL I wouldn't even be there!! But thems the breaks so to speak!! And isn't that why we all enjoy our horses - because they are not machines??!! All you can do - at any level - is prepare the best, do your best and hope for the best....it just wasn't Nick's day!!

Because we live in a NOA's who can't manage the simplistic of rules, driving using a mobile, illegally dangerous parking anywhere anyhow at school times etc etc, need I go on, it's because "they are special", so rules and laws don't apply to them, only everyone else.

TWAC, the last 3 letters are With A Camera, now children, can we work out the first letter ?

The fact that spectators are asked on numerous occasions not to take photos with the flash on should mean people have the curtesy not to. And that's at any level

Alyth - in many ways i do agree with you, and when they're outside competing they have to cope with all kinds of noises/sights/sounds etc.

However, if it had been expressly asked that people do not use flash photography it seems totally unfair on NS, and agree with those who said the idiot who seemed to think the rules do not apply to them should have been asked to leave, or had said camera confiscated until the end of the show...

What a load of tosh!! Horses at that level should be well desensitized to camera flashes!!!

Why? I don't know of an event photographer who would dream of using flash photography around horses, we all have the kit to deal with low light without using flash...

I get very frustrated when stood in the ring photographing and someone takes a photo with flash from outside of the ring. A. it's not going to be of any use, b. it's offputting for me let alone the poor horse and rider and c. you should know how to stop the flash from working if needs be!

I suppose Tom Daly needs to man up then, as h was allowed to do his dive again when the flash went off at the Olympics... If a top athlete who is used to photography finds it that offputting, then a horse surely has even more of an excuse as he can't rationalise with "it's just a camera"...

^^^ Totally agree with you Lolo. Enough requests were put out for people not to use flash. Why some ignorant folk feel this doesn't apply to them is a mystery. Selfish gits.

Quite agree, and it's because these morons are tolerated that they cause so many problems these days. Like the t*t that scratched my car last night...
I think gross acts of stupidity should be a chargeable offence and the culprits jailed accordingly and preferably sterilised....

I saw this happen at Olympia in 2006 - to Ellen Whitaker.

1) Why do people think they're so special that it doesn't apply to them?

2) They're only going to take crap photos anyway.

Agreed!!! i am going to olympia tomorrow and if i see one darn person use flash i will tell them to turn it off. annoys me all the time, it happens at the racing loads too!

If i was NS i would have gone at the end of the class and told that person where to get off

I quite agree, we have cameras flashing at ALL our shows even at WEG and even the official photographer puts up enormous flashes all round the arena linked to his camera and we and the horses have to get on with it.

Next you'll want absolute silence, in fact no crowd at all then the horses wont spook lol

The public are regularly asked not to use flash but most are so dim/stupid/selfish that they do not even realise that their cameras/phones flash automatically.

Yes horses at that level should be used to it but we are not talking of one flash but a veritable array of flashes especially for the top horses such as Nick's. It is only a matter of time until there is a serious accident.

At the World Cup Final in Las Vegas some years ago anyone allowing their flash to go off was escorted from the arena by stewards - jumping held up while this happened. Can you imagine the fuss the spoiled british public would make if that happened here - they would be straight off to the the European Court of Human Rights!

Until there is a fatal accident no one will enforce the request not to use flash so there is precious little point in even asking because people will do exactly what they want.
