I am wondering wether anyone could recommend a good camera.

Work in racing and want to get a decent camera, not for professional photography reasons just want to take nice photos. Anyway biggest problem i find is the lag in shutter speed and horses moving, causing some odd and blurry photos plus the whole empty jump scene (when you miss the horse and already over jump)

I know highest megapixal is best but what else to look for. Always had compact digital camera, is there a compact camera that would work, bridge camera or the full pro photographer camera my only option?

Canon Eos is what I've used for polo photography with pretty good results in daylight. Pretty foolproof on sport setting- I had pics published in Polo Times and american publications I took with mine. I am selling my old one as upgraded to a newer model I was offered by a family friend if you're interested in 2nd hand. Otherwise Nikon are always popular. A lot of the speed depends on light conditions and how decent your lens is if you are using full SLR. Hope that helps!

For less than £300 you will get the Nikon D3100 SLR camera, that will do the job nicely for you , the best starter SLR you can buy. Takes high speed action shots no bother. A great camera for the horses. Go google it, as you might even get it for less than £250, read the reviews about it also. Fab machine for little money ;-)
