Am following this as every single time I encounter an ijuut out on the roads I swear to myself that I will get a camera!

Problem is there's a lot out there, and on a FB "Pass Wide and Slow" group that I'm on there's a lot of people who've got stuff that sounds way too teccy for me!

Also there's the debate of whether you should have the actual camera mounted on your chest, or on your hat as a head-cam!

I remember going to a local horsey event backalong and someone was there with a head-cam which was supposed to have been designed especially for horse riders, they said it was much lighter than the bog-standard ones on the market, but at over £250 (then!) it was a tad over-budget for my consideration.

I've been looking at bullet or cylinder shaped helmet cameras for months.

I already have a box-shaped action camera with a waterproof housing, and it's OK for some uses, but I'm not so happy mounting it on a helmet.

This thread started me looking around again. There seem to be dozens of little Chinese made cameras in the £25 - £80 price range, with very similar specifications. All seem to have a 1/4" sensor, take about 3 hours to fully charge and give about 2-1/2 hours of filming.

Just search on Amazon for F9 Full HD 1080 P, and you should see models sold under the names of SODIAL, Eptek, Lyangbang,Andoer, Weihana and many others.

What seems to change is the bundle of straps, adapters and fixing plates, and some seem to have weird format USB connectors (pictures are usually not much good, but this is a comment that comes up in reviews sometimes).

Anyway, I took the plunge, and went for one badged "Zerone MC28" at €38

I should have it by tomorrow night, and I'll give it a try. If it works like the others, at the first use it creates a configuration file on the SD card; you can edit this file with a simple text editor to change the parameters such frames per second, loop filming (when the card is full, continue filming by overwriting the oldest files), and others.

That’s the cambox. It sits under the visor. I have one, very discrete and syncs with my phone too

It turns out that this one (Zerone MC28) is an absolute pile of shite.

The delivered package does not contain the list of what is described on the website, nor what is listed in the manual (and the two lists are different, too).

It's described on Amazon's site as "waterproof", but it is not; even the crappy "handbook" states that it is simply "water resistant"... putting an O-ring between the screw-on tail cover and the body would have been a good idea, but it seems that the manufacturers would know a good idea if it ran up and smacked them across the chops with a wet fish.

The controls are shoddy: one button to do everything, and the vibratory feedback and two LEDs are not much good at indicating the operating mode.

Audio is extremely poor. I recorded my own voice, speaking at a normal volume when holding the camera about 12cm in front of my face; played back, with the volume turned right up, I could just about hear myself. I doubt that it would pick up a conversation between me and somebody more than a couple of feet away, unless we were really shouting at each other.

It's going back to Amazon in a day or two; I have one of the F9 cameras ordered to replace this crappy MC28.

I have a cheap, Chinese bullet camera. Campark Action Cam 1080P. I really like it. It's well made, not heavy, fairly unobtrusive and the image quality is very good.

What could be better, are the headband is a bit on the short side, you get a lot of wind noise and I can't get it to continuously record. I can get it to record for however long the battery lasts, but it is all in 3 minute clips!

I think that the cheap cameras are all like that.

The camera starts by writing to a file with a name like MOV0000.mov and records for a certain time (or, more likely, until the file reaches a certain size). Then it increments the number from 0000 to 0001 and starts a new file.

In one way, this is a good thing: it is useful that the timestamp of the file will allow you to more easily find which file is likely to contain an event that you have filmed.

But I don't think that this was on the minds of the Chinese engineers... I think it's just a happy coincidence; the real reason is that the underlying hardware and software cannot handle very large files.

This is my hat cam that my partner bought me a few years ago - 2009 to be precise. I never used it apart from one warm up competition when I didn't position it correctly on my head and it only showed half of everything! I found it again the other week and thought I would use it but can't get it to record anything. There are two short videos of me testing it on the memory card but it still won't record, I messed about with it yesterday at work and my partner last night but to no avail. So I'm going to buy a new one.

Last night for the first time I thought I'd give it ago out hacking and plonked it on my hat and went out for an hour's hack. I thought the flashing light might deter speeders - wow what a difference! People really reacted to it by slowing down - those coming towards me anyway. Really good deterrent and brilliant if the thing did record! Grrr

I have this one. Campark Action Camera Waterproof... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LEAPVH6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I bought two spare batteries and a fixing kit which includes an elastic helmet strap
Neewer 8-In-1 Action Camera Accessory Kit for GoPro Hero 1/2/3/3+/4/5/6/7, Hero 4/5 Session, SJ4000/5000 Nikon and Sony Sports Camera and More https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00V62RZOK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_D5oADbZ7WHBYY

It records in 20 minute segments and I’m impressed with the quality. It’s been used by son for his car and OH for his bike too and the image is really stable. I too like the fact that it’s visible. It makes people much more respectful.

Just seen you last post - won't bother buying although I was tempted. Now I've seen your write up it seems no point. Sorry you are disappointed with it. Let me know how you get on with the F9.

KeithBeef does it have the strap similar to mine on Post 16 please? I've tried to have a look but its not very clear? Please do report back with a photo of how it is attached to the helmet as I may buy the same if you feel it is any good.

As in post 13: it's crap, don't buy it.

I'll write a bit about the F9 when it arrives.

Yes I wrote that and then deleted it when I scrolled up and saw you had said it was no good.

Pinning my hopes on the F9. I just wish I could get mine to work! It just flashes and doesn't film. Good deterrent but not much good if I need some evidence.
