Camping in a trailer

Just booked for camp at the end of the month :D

Unless we get a sudden heatwave I am presuming it might be a bit cold. I was wondering if it would be possible to put a tent in the trailer for an extra layer of protection? I don't have a centre partition so there is space but tent pegs wouldn't work. Would a pop up tent work?

I only have camped once before at Burghley last month and I struggled with the cold despite 2 quilts and a sleeping bag so trying to make it as comfortable as possible.
 
I've done this and I would say that getting your bed off the floor and having a good layer underneath you will be the best thing to keep you warm. Maybe one of those little camp beds on legs, and then take a spare quilt to fold up like a mattress on top of it. One of those tiny one-man pop up tents might be nice, but be careful and check the size before purchase, some are too tiny to fit a camp bed in!
Oh, and if it's cold wear a wooly hat and scarf or polo neck jumper. I camped for 4 nights on a clinic earlier this year and some nights were flipping cold, but that really made a difference.
 
I've just been camping for the first time and I am the biggest softy in the world for feeling the cold.

Buy a cheap airbed/blow up mattress. Wear thermals under a tracksuit then a large jumper. Heat holder socks. Last but not least take a hot water bottle easy to fill from your camping kettle or pan. If you are not warm as soon as you get into bed put more layers on, the night will only get colder so if you are cold early on you will stand no chance of getting any sleep.

Get some travel ear plugs too. Amazing how much noise there is in the dead of night.
 
We tried camping when we used to show a lot. Horrible :(:o:confused:

One night in a tent and I moved into the trailer. It wasn't bad and we did it a few times (only when there wasn't a convenient Travel Lodge though :D )

I am lucky that mine dont poo or pee in the trailer otherwise it might not have been very pleasant.

I bought some cheap carpet for the trailer floor which rolled up in transit. This made getting changed easier and also provided insulation if we slept in it.

Agree with plenty of insulation under you, its just as important as covers. The foam camping mats under an airbed work well. I always put a couple of duvets and old blankets in as well as the sleeping bags. A canvas camping wardrobe keeps your clothes straight too.

The real problem we found in cold weather was not sleeping, it was having nowhere nice and warm to sit in between horsey stuff, pub and sleeping.

Have you asked the venue. You can sometimes hire a caravan locally, they deliver and collect it, much nicer :D :D
 
Be careful using blow up air beds - we camped before an endurance ride on Shap one August - the air in the bed turned to just about ice, I have never been so cold.

Lessons learned - put loads of layers UNDER you as well as on top - or get a proper camp bed! Also second hats, scarves and fleeces for sleeping in. Love camping though, loads of fun!
 
i camp in my trailer in a tent bedroom i got off 'freecycle' its got loops on the top which i tie to the back & front inside the trailer then put a camp bed and insulated bed roll inside , its very cosy
i also sleep in a hoodie to keep my head warm , hot water bottle a good idea

I have a canvas camp bed (and matching stool :D), I put a duvet on top of that to sleep on as well. Its not actually that bad but I wouldnt want to make a habit out of it. Im more of a hotel girl as well.
 
You need a good ole Aussie swag :-) - perfect for camping in trailers! Canvas outer protects you from damp air and also protects the mattress which is decent foam so nice and warm to lay on, pop in a good duvet or winter weight sleeping bag and some pillows, it all rolls up together for storage. I don;t know if you can get them in the UK but we 'roughed it' in trailers, horseboxes and sometimes in the open just in a swag at polocrosse and campdrafting events even when overnight temperatures got into single figures (yes it does get cold in parts of Australia!)
 
I camped at burghley and we had an airbed, blanket over it and then just my down quilt and huge furry blanket over the top we were toasty.

Too warm to even use the sleeping bags. :)

Never thought of a hot water bottle but so obvious!
I really like the carpet idea for the trailer floor and trying the tent to the roof.
 
I used to go winter mountaineering, so was fairly good at staying warm at night :D

Insulate from the ground. Put a sleeping mat (the thin foam type) under your mattress of choice. You can get different densities for different seasons. We would just have a sleeping bag on top of that, but an air bed or camp bed would probably be more comfortable :cool:

Take a fleece hat (not wool!) to wear through the night. Stops a huge amount of escaping heat.

How about a swag? They have the mattress already inside and have the layer of canvas underneath and over the top. They are roomy enough to fit in multiple sleeping bags!
I've slept in the back of floats/trucks in my swag on nights reaching -3 and haven't been cold! Take something so you can boil water and put some hot water bottles in too :D

On another note, if camping is something you want to do regularly, then invest in a good quality sleeping bag that can handle the colder temps. They can make all the difference!
 
When I used to go showing in Australia we always used to camp in our trailer. As unicorndreams says, yes it does get cold at night in aus!
We put a piece of tarp down on the floor, covered by an old sheet of office carpet so we had a nice floor with no icky bits and a bit of insulation.
Then we had our two camping beds on each side of the trailer with about 10 duvets, a foam piece beneath us for a mattress and another 2 duvets underneath to stop the cold coming through. I always swore I would get a swag to sleep in on top of the bed, but never got around to it.
We had electric hookup in our trailer (we have big fancy trailers in australia) so we could plug in an electric heater and turned it on when we got desperate. Though I don't know what to suggest without the hookup!
 
Why not a woollen hat MrsM?

I cant really be doing with sleeping bags, especially the 'mummy' type ones that narrow to the base. Hate the feeling of having my legs restricted.

Not sure what a swag is, I suspect we might not have them here.
 
What is your towing vehicle? I have found it much nicer to sleep in the back of my Surf (the poor mans Land Rover!) and use the float (aka trailer!) as a storage/cooking area!! You are off the ground, a sponge mattress is the best, windows slightly open at the top allow ventilation without encouraging mossies....the main thing is to have fun while being as comfy as possible!!
