Hi i wondered if anyone has any advice about this horrible condition, we pretty much rescued our weimaraner bitch from a family that basically couldn't be bothered with her and since we have had her she has had this campylobacter we have had her now for 8 weeks and she has been on antibiotics after antibiotics (she has just finished her third lot of tablets which last for 2 weeks one tab twice a day) which doesn't seem to get rid of it, as soon as she goes on the tablets her poos are fine but as soon as she comes off them they are back to being runny, the vet has said this condition is treatable but can take along time to get right and antibiotics is the only thing that cures it . I am just getting very concerned now because of the amount of antibiotics she has been on for such a young dog has anyone else had experience with this illness if so what did you do?? Thanks for reading

It does sound as if she has a really bad case. I assume your vet knows what he is doing, but it may be worth getting a second opinion, or trying a different sort of antibiotic. As it is bacterial it can be cleared up, but it does seem to be taking a very long time. Have you asked whether it will do any permanent damage to your dog's digestive system? Is she on special food? I do feel sorry for you - runny dog poo is no joke!

be very careful handling you dog and make sure you wear gloves and wash hands after clearing up poo etc as campylobactor can infect humans too. hope things soon get sorted for your dog, bless her.

Oh I know about this one!
My dog had it twice at about the same age.
He also had antibiotics after antibiotics.
Over 8 pooh samples taken.
Lots of blood tests etc.
The only thing that finally cured it was 2 courses of steroids. Both were very strong and not cheap.
They also made him excessively thirsty. To the point were he often had several accidents in the house.

It took about 3 weeks for it too clear up properly.
My dog suffered from Colitis and IBS as a side effect of it too.
That lasted about 6 months too I am afraid.

I still have to be very careful what I feed him now.
I hope she gets better soon,Ice was so very poorly with it.
Good luck.

My vet told me that it does (and has in Ice's case) caused permanent damage to there/his digestive system.

But he also said it is often better for puppies/young dogs to get it as their intestine will improve as they get older as they are still growing.Hope that makes sense!

The only food Ice can have now is James Wellbeloved.
He can have a few extra bits now he is older but I am still very careful as to what I give him.
I wouldn't wish it on anybody,it really was a horrible time for me and Ice.

I am quite an expert on runny pooh now!
OH and I often spent the evening on the sofa discussing what Ice's bowel movements had been that day!

Even everyone I work with knew about it!

My dog contracted this a few months ago after eating what I can only describe as decomposed, rat-nibbled meat from a NYC park

It took a month of antibiotics to get her system back to normal, and she lost 2lbs (she's only 17lbs to begin with). She is pretty hardy, though, and her stomach is completely fine, though the vet did say not all dogs are so lucky, and it can be a tricky condition to get under control.

I hope your dog is feeling better soon.

Many years ago my puppy had this at 8 weeks old, and she passed it on to my 18 month old son! Think the pup came to us with it, but it is very nasty. As far as I can remember my son recovered faster than the pup, she needed a couple of courses of antibiotics. Your girl does seem to have had it a long time, I would also think it might be worth getting a second opnion. Good luck, and please be careful you don't pick it up yourself.
