YO turned out an uncut colt with the oldies, as he thought they'd be safe! Mine is at least 25 so we're pretty sure she will be, but she was in season today for the first time in years... eek! Luckily he's moved the colt anyway but I just wondered if she's coming into season could she theoretically get pregnant?

Possibly!!! Ife she has been a successful broodmare in the past its likely she can get pregnant again. Some mares are still breeding into their twenties, if they are on good nutrition and in good health! I once heard of a 32 year old mare giving birth to a healthy foal, obviously this is not ideal, so keep an eye on your mare and get a vet to run a blood test to make truly sure if you are worried, they can be given a prostraglandin injection to prevent the pregnancy progressing.

She's never had a foal. I'm also assuming if she's in season now and the colt has already been moved, that she won't be up the duff... really not a good idea as she has Cushings!!! Would have been nice if yo had asked about putting an entire in with my mare.

When did he move the colt? If it wasn't more than a couple of days ago then yes, there IS a risk of pregnancy. It's low, as she hasn't foaled before (or at least for some/many years) because old mares who haven't bred regularly are very prone to fluid retention which prevents pregnancy.

I had a 17 year old mare to my stallion two years ago who hadn't foaled for 10 years. ANother stud had tried to get her in unsuccessfully (over 3 cycles). We got her in on the second attempt - but it took a LOT of intervention!

The fact you haven't seen her in season does not mean she didn't have seasons - older mares often do NOT show in season without the presence of a stallion.

Because of her age and medical condition, if there is ANY chance at all that he covered her, then I would get her scanned 14 days after the estimated covering date so in the unlikely event of a pregnancy it can be easily terminated. Terminating a pregnancy in late term is NOT particular 'safe' or nice! (And give the YO the bill for the scan!!)

When next door's colt got through the fencing and was seen covering my mare, she had the injection to abort any developing foetuses. Carrying and suckling a foal could have killed liver-damaged Angel so we had no other choice. The injection can be given as a precaution, without waiting for blood tests or scans. Take care if you are checking before giving the injection because there is only a relatively short window of time when it will work. The injection has to be given aat about 10 - 14 days (I think it was) and Angel didn't get pregnant. Terminations given much later are horrendous

25 year old mares can definitely get pregnant, i met one last week. If she's a maiden or hasnt had a foal for a VERY long time then its less likely (not least because grumpy old mares like to tell bolshy little colts just where to go with their over-active hormones !) but I would still be concerned, and VERY cross with the YO.
