I bought a bridle off ebay with the intention of using it as a spare. When it aririved it was cheap cardboard leather, but I thought it looked okay so would try it.

Went to yard today, put bridle on, and it was slightly too big in the throatlash and noseband (not dagerously so) , but thought what the heck, daughter only wanted a pootle about anyway, so left it on as I hadnt brought the other one with us.

First he bucked, then he started spinning. So i took a hold of him and got daughter to ask him to walk. He was an absolute pillock! started napping, throwing his head about, then in trot kept cantering off, so I told daughter to get him to walk away from me then back again and we'd end it there, on a good note.

She walked him away from me, he napped, she used the stick on his shoulder gently and growled at him. He carried on walking fowards, she turned him back towards me and he cleared off with her. We're not talking just a little clear off, he just WENT, sodded off past me and carried on up the field, bucking and hooning. Luckily daughter stayed on by the skin of her teeth.

The only change since yesterday was the bridle (normally wears an english leather soft one). Today's bridle fitted in the cheekpieces and wasnt rubbing anywhere so can't understand it?

when we turned him back out he hooned round the field for a good 15 mins, galloping flat out, bucking and farting. He never does that... not when he's out 24/ 7.

she's due to do her first 'off the leadrein' class on sunday and now I'm a bit wary

has anyone else ever had this with a cheap bridle?? Or could it be the grass? he's muzzled 24/ 7....
or the fact the kids have recently started cantering him? maybe hes getting a bit excited having only ever been a leadrein pony before??

most of you know of him from here, and he's such a placid (sometimes cheeky but never very naughty) pony who I normally trust implicitly.

thoughts would be welcome.

It sounds more likely to be coming off the leadrein and feeling rather excited and silly rather than the bridle. I would see what happens during the next few days and then decide about the class on Sunday. You don't want the set back of unnerving your little girl. Please let us know how things go.

He could be just having a lively day, TBH the only way to tell would be to put him back in his usual one to find out. Having a 'harder' bridle can make a big difference, as could the height of the bit in his mouth- That probably wasn't exactly the same, tiny changes could make the difference. Im lucky enough to have everything in once place, so when I get a situation like this I change them back, and TBH almost alwats they were just having a 'day'. None of ours care what bridle they are in, and the syntetic plastic coated ones are very hard...

He's been ridden off the leadrein for well over a year now, well, since we got him, but only recently started cantering.
