I have recently switched from hunter shavings to bed down-my boy has come up in hives across his back, could it really be down to the shavings??

I havent changed anything else except this so it has to be just think it is a bit odd!
Also have just bought £60 quids worth of the stuff so if it is I'm a bit stuffed :o

Hi

Thats the first question the vet asked me when the same thing happened to my mare, so I guess it can happen.

I hadn't changed my shavings or opened a new bag and we never found out what it was that caused it.

Yes i reckon so, I have allergies myself so have to bed mine on paper, and most wood shavings I'm allergic too, they give me a blocked nose, itchy eyes and skin and theres just a couple of brands that I've tried that i can cope with, so must be the same for horses.

I once made a mistake when it came to buying a pallet load of bedding that was no good, I managed to sell it though and got the money to pay for something else- could you do the same? gd luck!- such a lot of money as well!

Damn I was really hoping it wouldnt be but never mind :o
K27-very annoying isnt it, hopefully someone down the yard will buy it off me or do a swap as it wasnt the cheap, cheap stuff just I couldnt get the hunter shavings that day.

Yeah so so annoying for you-I've just had a thought- will your supplier take back the unused bales and swap or credit them for you?, esp if you explain the prob you've had!

If he has a rug on and its over the last few days its more likely he has lay down and just got hot. My lad came out in them yesterday just in one place on his side, they have almost gone today:D

Thanks for all the suggestions-going to give him a week on them if not will take them back & see if they will swap them for my usual stuff, most annoying!

Yes, My horse has a severe reaction to a change of shavings, and not even his own bed but a stable next door, he came up in hives and then went into an Anaphylactic shock, fortunately the vet had been called for the hives and gave his steriod injections etc, after a few days treatment and my neighbours change of bed for when he returned he was fine, but both the vets said it was a close call!
I know his reaction was extreme, but does make you worry whats in some of these beddings.

Interesting my mare has come out in what I suspected was a heat rash from being rugged in her stable ( she's fully clipped but a welsh x) so I have her naked during the day and with one lw rug on over night I malaseb every other day as it's still visable but no scabs just raised bumps I am five weeks on and only just riding again in walk but I now wonder if it's the shavings too as she's incredibly itchy I make sure new bags go in when she's out and I mix it up with the old bed as I wondered if it was the dust but maybe she's just allergic? I think I'm going back to easibed

person above, rather than going back to easibed, can i suggest you give comfybed a go instead?? Similar if not better stuff as I find it less dusty, and you get a 25kg bale for cheaper than you would a 20kg bale of easibed!!

I have tried both and the easibed is surely the bigger bale? certainly the ones I have used have had more in. I once put a bag of each in side by side and you could REALLY see the difference. Also easibed doesn't degrade as fast IMHO

I may well be wrong but am pretty sure that last time i looked easibed was about 7 odd quid for a 20kg bale and the comfybed was about 6.15 for a 25kg bale???

Couldn't honestly tell you about the degrading as haven't looked at them together
