Can a splotchy dog get more splotches?

Perfectly serious question I promise

Flick is lying next to me on the sofa fast asleep (ha, I love taking them eventing and wearing them out

) and I swear she has more black splotches on her back and legs than when I got her 6 months ago

Is this possible

She has just turned two years old, my instinct says no it isnt possible

Otto's marking change all the time, he is very heavily roaned with two big black splotches on his back, but suddenly in the last couple of months two small blobs have appeared at the base of his neck.
However, he is only 14 months old and is still maturing in every sense of the word.

My oldest lurcher is cream and white. She had a few white patches (it looked like someone had flicked a paint brush at her) when we got her 7 years ago but has gained a lot more as she has gotten older.
