Considering having first foal (not mares first) and amongst the other zillion questions, is, after the foal has gone through the weaning process, it would have to share the field again with its mother, as I keep mine at home, has anyone else done this and what timescale would you keep them apart before introducing them again??

My filly is living elsewhere at the moment, in a field with among others, a mare and her yearling daughter. They are fine, but they do have other companions so it isn't just the two of them.

i was told it was about two months just so that the mums milk dries up but make sure she dry completely cause if he goes in and trys to suckle he may just bring her milk supply on again so i would say try and keep away as long as possible

The rule we have used: if they have been kept apart long enough where they don't recognize each other anymore, then they can share space. There is more than just the physical to deal with here - and it's the emotional. If you have ever seen a dam with an outgrown daughter, in which the mother-child tie was never broken, then you'll know why: behavior problems, etc.

My first foal went back in the field with his mum and another gelding after 3 weeks. However she would never let them try to suckle again, leave it longer if your mare might let her try to suckle as it could stimulate her milk again.

keep them apart for as long as possible someone i know sent filly off for weaning few months later filly came back and went in field with mum who had completely dried up but filly went in to suckle and it was back to square one so be careful
