I agree, and I have seen it happen twice. A girl up my yard (she was about 10 then) broke in a pony, and completely ruined it. She would ride this unfit 13.2hh 3 yr old canter it round for ages hanging off its mouth, and when it was too warn out to carry on, she would smack it (still hanging off its mouth) Also, another girl bought a young horse to bring on, when she's only been riding a year, and tbh doesnt have a very good seat, although atleast she's not cruel to her horses. Sometimes I wonder ...

Off to see it tomorrow hopefullly

"why did you buy it?"
"to keep rocket company, and make a profit, hes very lively"

oh dear!

I would definatly offer to help, just drop it into a convosation (sp), and see what they say.

Yeah, they still have lessons with us, and helen is friends with her sis so will hopefully convince them to keep it with us..

well I woud ask who IS supposed to start ponies that are smaller? Children almost have to! Guided of course. Morgan was 4 when she began riding Charlie who was two at the time. When Charlie was three I had a young boy of 8 work him He did great and I eventually sold him pretty well started for his age. He even had lots of (lead) rode experience under saddle.

Morgan had no real experience trianing ( what child that age really does? ) but someone had to ride that pony. I was always there to help her. What worries me in this situation is that it appears this girl does not have parents that know much (???)

That is the only way I feel it would work out..she needs support

I backed ponies when I was younger than 9, however it was always under experienced adult supervision.

My daughter backed 2 horses (for boarders) and 1 of our wild ponies at the age of 10 and did a sterling job of them all, however once again, I did watch over what she was doing just to make sure she didn't make any glaring mistakes.
