I'm thinking of buying a nice 14.2 pony. I want to start competing but only on a local fun level. Am I going to restrict my classes drastically. He is a lovely little boy and goes really well over jumps up to 3ft which to be honest is about my own level.

Yes, have done for years. Did riding club SJ teams years ago, the height restriction for that is 14hh and over, so you'll be fine!

Have fun!

Some local shows do have age restrictions on ponies but mostly they dont. Just be prepared to have to take on the kids! I jump my little 13hh pony (I'm 35!) and usually find myself competing with ten year olds!

yes you can compete on a pony but not in showing classes such as show hunter pony or working hunter pony classes.

You can but often you wil be expected to compete against horses, going by the local shows around here. Classes for 14.2hh and under are restricted to riders under 16, so I have to compete my 14.2hh in the horse classes as I am considered too old!

I wouldn't mind too much but it can make jumping doubles a bit hairy as she can sometimes struggle to make the distance. They usually have novice horse classes though that are under 3ft.

You also won't be able to do things like working hunter pony and such, although M&M showing is fine (our local show has a caveat that the rider must be an appropriate size for the pony, I've not been told off for pony squishing yet though!)

Yes - I have a m&m which helps but I also do riding club pony on him and dressage.

Local shows have less age restrictions.
